Organizational commitment
Introduction
Organizational commitment is the degree to
which an employee identifies with the
organization and wants to continue actively
participating in it . Organizations, however, are
complex and made up of number of divisions
each with their own agendas and goals.
Commitment can therefore be directed at
specific aspects of a person’s job such as
department, location, and trade unions.
Kinds of Organizational Commitment

 Continuance Commitment
Continue working for an organization because you
cannot afford to leave the organization.
 Affective Commitment
Continue working for organization because you agree and
desire to work for it.
 Normative Commitment
Continue working for an organization because you
face pressure from others to remain
Levels of Organizational Commitment

There are three levels of organizational commitment.


High level of organizational commitment.
High level of organizational commitment is characterized by strong
acceptance of organization’s goals and values and willingness to exert
the efforts to remain in the organization.
Moderate level of organizational commitment.
Moderate level of organizational commitment is characterized by
reasonable acceptance of organization’s goals and values and
willingness to exert the efforts to remain in the organization.
Low level of organizational commitment.
Low level of organizational commitment is characterized by a lack of
neither acceptance of organization’s goals and values nor willingness
to exert efforts to remain in the organization.
Factors Affecting Organizational Commitment
Employment Opportunities.
The existence of job opportunity can affect organizational commitment.
Individuals who have strong perception that they stand a chance to another job
may become less committed to the organization.
Working Environment.
One of the common working environmental conditions that may affect
organizational commitment positively is partial ownership of a company.
Ownership of any kind gives employees a sense of importance and they feel part
of the decision-making process.
Positive Relationships.
The organization as a workplace environment is built up of working relationships;
one of them is supervisory relationships.
The supervisory relationship can affect organizational commitment either
positively or negatively. A positive supervisory relationship depends on how to
work-related practice such as performance management are being implemented
in the organization.
Organizational Structure.
The organizational structure can affect organizational commitment either positively
or negatively. Bureaucratic structure tend to have a negative affect and democratic
structure tends to have a positive affect on organizational commitment.
Factors to Increase Organizational Commitment
Changes in Structure.
Job rotation: Moving workers from one specialized job to another.
Job enlargement: The practice of allowing workers to take on additional varied
task in effort to make them feel that they are more valuable members of the
organization.

Changes in Pay Structure.


Skill-based pay: Paying employees an hourly rate based on their knowledge and
skills.
Merit Pay: A plan in which the amount of compensation is directly a function of a
employee’s performance.
Flexible Work Schedules.
Compressed work weeks: The number of workdays in
decrease while the number of hours worked per day is
increased.
Flextime: A scheduling system whereby a worker is
commitment to a specified number of hours per week but
has some flexibility concerning the starting and ending
times of any particular workday.

o Different retirement plans.
o Career development programs.
