Membrane
Membrane - This is the
outer boundary of the
cell. Sort of like the skin.
It allows some substances
in and keeps others out.
Mitochondria
Mitochondria - This is
where the cell gets its
energy. In the human body,
food we have digested
reacts with oxygen in the
mitochondria to make
energy for the cell.
Ribosomes
Ribosomes - Ribosomes
are like tiny factories
that make different
things the cell needs to
function, like proteins.
Nucleus
Nucleus - The nucleus
is the brains of the
cell. It uses
chromosomes to
instruct the rest of the
cell what to do next.
Cytoplasm
Cytoplasm - This is the
stuff that fills up the rest
of the cell. The other
components of the cell
float around in the
cytoplasm. It's mostly
water.
Lysosomes
Lysosomes - These guys
clean up the place
getting rid of waste
and other unwanted
substances that may
get into the cell.
Mission: The first Line of
Inmortal human cells.
Based on the topic, students must watch a video about the Hela
cells: The first inmortal human cells. And answer the following three
questions:
What are some of the characteristics of cancer cells like HeLa that
help them evade death?
Why is it so important for scientists to have a tool like HeLa cells in
order to study human disease?
Dr. Gey took a sample of the tumor cells from Henrietta Lacks
without her or her family’s permission. He then gave away sample of
HeLa cells to labs all over the world. While Dr. Gey did not profit
from HeLa, the Lacks family was completely unaware of Henrietta’s
contributions to science for decades. Do you think what Dr. Gey did
was ethical, and do you think this type of situation would happen
today? Why or why not?
