SVA (subject-verb agreement)
 Subject and verb must agree in number.
 Singular subject, singular verb
 Example:
UPM is the largest university in Malaysia.
Global warming is a serious phenomenon worldwide.
Aminah enjoys lisytening to music while studying.

 Plural subject, plural verb


 Example:
Students are encouraged to join extra curricular activities.
London and Japan are countries I would like to visit soon.
People enjoy drinking teh tarik in the evening.
Fragment
 A fragment is an incomplete sentence/ missing a
subject or verb

 Example 1
Is a very good sports activity. (missing subject)

To correct this sentence, add a subject.


Swimming is a very good sports activity.
 Example 2
Students in that school very hardworking.

(missing verb)

 To correct this sentence, add a verb.


Students in that school are very hardworking.

Run-on

 happens when you join two simple sentences


without a comma and without a connecting
word (coordinator/ subordinator)

 Example:
Men like to shop quickly women like to
browse.
Comma splice

 happens when you join two simple sentences


with a comma alone.

 Example:
Men like to shop quickly, women like to
browse.
3 ways to correct run-on and
comma splice errors
 1. Make two sentences. Separate the two
sentences with a period.

Men like to shop quickly. Women like to


browse.
 2. Join the two sentences with a comma and a
coordinator (FANBOYS).

Men like to shop quickly, but women like to


browse.
 3. Join the two sentences with a
subordinator.

Men like to shop quickly while women


like to browse.
