Tommy Yeo, a junior high school student who attends Thomson Secondary School, is the
youngest person in Singapore to be commended by the police for an act of public spirit.
He was presented with a certificate by the police commissioner.
The 14-year-old student was visiting his uncle’s stationery shop in the busy Bishan shooping area on
Saturday afternoon. As usual, the walkway was crowded with shoppers, and suddenly he heard a lady
screaming, “Robber! Robber!”
He then saw a rather skinny lady chasing after a stoutly built man. They zoomed past his uncle’s
shop. He remembered that this was the man whom he had seen loitering around the area previously.
The lady in high heels sprained her ankles and fell to the ground with a loud thud. There were some
people already attending to the victim.
Without hesitation, Tommy started to chase after the man who tried desperately to shake off his
trail. Concidently, two policeman on foot patrol saw the incident and joined in the chase. The culprit was
finally subdued, handcuffed, and taken away to the police station together with a purse as court exhibit.
The victim and Tommy were also requested to report to the police station to give evidence to the police.
At the police station, an officer said that Tommy was very lucky because the culprit was wanted for a
series of theft and robbery cases. He was armed and extremely dangerous.
Later when asked by his uncle, Tommy said that he felt very scared when he learned that the culprit
was a wanted dangerous criminal.
