• The history of Philippine folk
dancing incorporates influences
from immigrants and
conquerors while at the same
time maintaining distinctly
Filipino roots. Philippine folk
dancing is a true reflection of
daily life in past centuries while
enchanting modern audiences
at the same time.
Singkil is a very unique
SINGKIL Philippines traditional dance of
the Maranao people in Southern
Philippines. It is said to be
inspired by the age-old Hindu
epic “Ramayana” and another
mythological epic from South
East Asia called “Darangen“.
CARIÑOSA

• is a Philippine dance of
Hispanic origin from the
Maria Clara suite of
Philippine folk dances,
where the fan or
handkerchief plays an
instrumental role as it
places the couple in
romance scenario.
BINASUAN
• Binasuan is a folk dance that
originated in Bayambang,
Pangasinan,. The word
“binasuan” means “with the
use of drinking glasses.” The
dancers balance glasses on
their heads and in their hands
as they move. The glasses are
filled with rice wine, which
makes any misstep a messy
mistake.
• Sayaw sa Bangko is a famous
Pilipino folk dance in which the
dancers must use good skill and
balance as they dance on top of a
narrow bench. Dancers showcase
their skills as they dance atop a
SAYAW SA narrow bench, while constantly

• The Maglalatik is an
indigenous dance from the
Philippines in which coconut
shell halves that are secured
onto the dancers' hands and on
vests upon which are hung four
or six more coconut shell

IK
TINIKLING
• Tinikling is a traditional
Philippine folk dance which
originated during the Spanish
colonial era. The dance
involves two people beating,
tapping, and sliding bamboo
poles on the ground and
against each other in
coordination with one or more
dancers who step over and in
between the poles in a dance.
SURTIDO
• is a dance traditionally performed by
single women to attract the attention
of potential suitors. Dancers perform
a series of graceful movements as
they step in and out from between
bamboo poles which are
rhythmically clapped together. Fans
and scarves are often used to
enhance the dancers' movements.
• Subli is a Philippines traditional
dance and is extremely popular in
provinces such as Batangas and
Luzon. Apparently, this dance is
performed to honour the “Holy
Cross of Alitagtag” usually
during the month of May.
Furthermore, this dance at times
also comprises of a chant to the
“Holy Cross”.
