HAPPY CHILDHOOD

MEMORY
What it is
Well, it’s my honor to be here today and if it comes to the topic
of a happy childhood memory of mine, it would definitely be the
time when I got my first bike as my 7th birthday gift.
When it happened
I grew up in a poor family and actually at that time every family
experienced the same situation as Vietnam had just got out of the
arduous war against the American. My parents were both teachers, and
although we were respected by the neighbors, it was unlikely that we
had a decent life. As a well-educated and well-behaved son, I just didn’t
allow myself to ask my parents for anything for the birthday as they were
miserable enough taking care of everyday meals.
So nothing can describe how surprised and overwhelmed I was
receiving the bike from my dad.
How it affected your life
It totally changed my life and I can say it brought me to an all-new
level. I used to walk about 10 km and spend some 80 minutes to go t
o school, so having a bike meant that I could sleep for at least 30
minutes more in the morning, one of the most wonderful things
could happen to a child of that age. That was not to mention the fact
that thanks to the bike, I became the Big Brother of the boys in my
class – the most desired honor, the dream of every boy – because
they all wanted me to give them a lift.
Why you still remember it.
I’m sure that I will remember it for my whole life, not only because
how important and valuable it was at that time but also because I
knew how hard my parents had to try in order to buy me that bike.
And although we did have higher living standard afterwards with
other fancier vehicles, I still kept the bike and sometimes used it for
short distant trips in years later.
Part 3:

1. Why is childhood important?

It’s simply because childhood is the vital stage for both mental and
physical development of any child. From my perspective, it should b
e a care-free period in which children should be provided with the be
st conditions and environment to form their personalities as well as to
gain necessary skills and knowledge for the future.
2. How did you spend your childhood?
As I mentioned above, I grew up in a not-so-rich family and like
most Vietnamese children at that time, my childhood was quite
peaceful and happy.
Actually, I was a well-behaved son and a good student at school who
could make my parents and my teachers proud.
3. Who was your childhood hero? Did you want to be like him/
her?
Like other children of the post-war generation, my childhood hero
was President Ho Chi Minh. He was our National Hero, who
sacrificed his whole life leading the country to victory and freedom.
In actual fact, I believed he was considered to be one of the 10
greatest humans of the 20th century.
He was so great that he used to be the role model of not only
children but also all Vietnamese.
