SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT
➔ is the “development that meets the needs
of the present without compromising the
ability of future generations to meet their
own needs.” (Bruntland Commision Report, 1987)
HOW DID THE IDEA OF SUSTAINABLE
DEVELOPMENT BECOME RELEVANT?
Ecological crises:
• Global warming
• Air pollution
• Loss of biodiversity and ozone layer
depletion

Social crises:
• 1907: the American banking crisis
• 1973 and 1979: oil shocks
• 1982: the debt shock of developing countries

- Must maintain a stable resource base avoiding


overexploitation of renewable resource systems
and depleting non-renewable resources
- Interdependence between human and nature
- Environment-friendly technology
- Community plan for ecological protection and
preservation
- Maintenance of biodiversity, atmospheric
stability, and other ecosystem functions

Goals (SDGs)
GENERAL INFORMATION
● The SDGs are the blueprint to achieve a better
and more sustainable future for all.
● They address the global challenges we face,
including poverty, inequality, climate change
environmental degradation, peace and justice.
● They were set in 2015 by the United Nations
Assembly and are intended to be achieved by the
year 2030.
● The 17 SDGs are integrated.
