1.1 Overview of Mechanical Engineering

WHAT IS AN ENGINEERING ?
• Engineering is the profession in which knowledge of the mathematical

and natural sciences gained by study, experience, and practice is

applied with judgment to develop ways to utilize, economically, the

materials and forces of nature for the benefit of mankind.

1.1 Overview of Mechanical Engineering

WHY YOU WANT TO BE AN ENGINEER?

• You have high goals in life

• Want to get a strong college education!

• You like math and sciences, and would like to apply them to real world

problems!

• You enjoy hands-on work and tinkering with things!

• You were told that engineers make a lot of money!

• You were told that you can get a good job with an engineering degree!

• You want to help humanity!

1.1 Overview of Mechanical Engineering
MECHANICAL ENGINEERING
• Mechanical engineering is the second largest and one of the oldest
disciplines.
• You might find the subject both exciting and challenging.
• Almost every industry needs mechanical engineers.
• The curriculum is sufficiently broad so students can take various
career paths upon graduation.
• Perhaps the broadest of all the engineering disciplines.
• Finding creative solutions to difficult problems!
• Working with motion, energy, forces, and materials.
• Concerned with analysis, design, manufacture and operation of areas
such as:
Energy/Defense/Environment/Health & Bio/Manufacturing/ Transportation
1.1 Overview of Mechanical Engineering

What is Mechanical Engineering

• Mechanical engineering is an engineering discipline that applies the

principles of physics and materials science for analysis, design,

manufacturing, and maintenance of mechanical systems.

• It is the branch of engineering that involves the production and usage of

heat and mechanical power for the design, production, and operation of

machines and tools.

1.1 Overview of Mechanical Engineering

Main Branches of Mechanical Engineering

1.1 Overview of Mechanical Engineering

Production
• Production is the branch of Mechanical Engineering that deals with the

production of predesigned products.

• It generally deals with mass and Batch production.

Special Skills required :

• Great Management and good communication Skills.

• Deep knowledge of manufacturing processes and machining operations.

• Easier than designing and QC.

1.1 Overview of Mechanical Engineering

Maintenance
• Maintenance is that branch of mechanical engineering that deals with the

maintenance of machines and equipment such that they run with

maximum efficiency, minimum pollution and increased life.

• Easier availability of Job.

Special Skills required :

• Higher technical Skills related to machines, mechanism, bearing,

standards and cost controlling skill.

Designing
• Designing is the branch of mechanical engineering that deals with
designing of new machines, parts, components and new and more
efficient systems.
Special Skills required :
• Great and deep knowledge of subjects like physics, material Science,
mechanics, machine design, Calculus etc.
• High presentation skills are required.
• Deep knowledge of at-least 3-4 CAD software is basic need.
• Basic or Advanced Knowledge of C++, PLC and Microcontroller
Programming is considered as positive aspects.

Quality Control
• Quality control (QC) is a procedure or set of procedures intended to
ensure that a manufactured product or performed service adheres to a
defined set of quality criteria or meets the requirements of the client or
customer.
• A mechanical Engineer Concerned With QC is Called QC engineer.
Special Skills required :
• High Knowledge & skills of Metrology Instrumentation is Required.
• External degree and certificates required for γ- radiation, Ultrasonic and
Non-Destructive Testing.

Careers in Mechanical
• Mechanical Engineering finds application in all fields of technology. It is

one of the primitive branches of Engineering which have remained

always in demand and continue to be in the future.

• This is why Mechanical trade is called as an Evergreen trade (branch).

Mechanical engineers have always been needed as essential staff

personnel in various industries of both public and private sector.
