CEREBROVASCULAR

CIRCULATION
PRIYANKA ARUN
VERTEBRAL ARTERIES
The vertebral arteries originating from the subclavian arteries , enter to the
skull through foramen magnum
The two vertebral arteries unite at the level of the pons to become the singular
basilar artery
Basilar artery subdivided into posterior cerebral arteries that supply part of the
cerebrum
 In general the vertebral arteries and their branches supply the cerebellum,
the brain stem , the spinal cord , the occipital lobes . The medial and inferior
surface of the temporal lobes and the posterior diencephalon
 The first branch of the basilar artery is the anterior inferior cerebellar artery .
It is also origin of the pontine arteries , the internal auditory arteries , and
the posterior cerebellar arteries
MAJOR VERTEBRAL ARTERIES & THE CEREBRAL
ARTERIES
ARTERY AREA SUPPLIED
VERTEBRAL BRANCHES
Anterior spinal artery *Anterior two third of the spinal cord
Posterior spinal artery *posterior one third of the spinal cord
posterior inferior cerebellar *under surface of the cerebellum , medulla
, and choroid plexus of fourth ventricle
BASILAR ARTERY BRANCHES
Posterior cerebral artery Occipital lobes , medial and inferior
surface of the temporal lobe , midbrain and
choroid plexus of third and lateral ventricle
Posterior choroidals Tectum , choroid plexus of third ventricle
Medial posterior choroidal and superior and medial surface of the
Lateral posterior choroidal thalamus . Penetrating the choroidal
fissure and anastomosing with branches of
the anterior choroidal arteries
Anterior inferior cerebellar Under surface of the cerebellum and the
lateral surface of the pons
Superior cerebellar Upper surface of the midbrain and
CIRCLE OF WILLIS
 The circle of willis , which is located at the base of the skull
 Anterior & posterior circulation
 Middle cerebral arteries , the anterior cerebral arteries and the anterior
communicating artery
 Two posterior cerebral arteries , two posterior communicating arteries
 The circle of Willis encloses very small area
 It is a protective mechanism by which blood was shunted to compensate for
alterations in cerebral blood flow or pressure
 The vessels of the circle of Willis , particularly communicating artery may be
anomalous .nevertheless , in favorable instances , the circle not permit an
adequate blood supply to reach all part of brain, even after one or more of
the four supplying vessels has been ligated
PECULARITIES
 ARTERY OF ADAM

 STROKE (PICA,AICA)

 SEGMENTAL ARTERIES
