WHAT IS A PSYCHIATRIC NURSE?

Psychiatric nurses are nurses who provide care for patients with
psychiatric disorders. Provide psychotherapy under the direction of
a psychiatrist.
PSYCHIATRIC NURSE DUTIES

• Providing care for patients who have psychiatric disorders


• Provide psychotherapy under the direction of a psychiatrist
• Record the patient's medical and psychological history, physical assessment results,
diagnosis, treatment plans, prescriptions, or results
• Diagnose psychiatric disorders and mental health conditions
• Evaluate patient behavior to formulate a diagnosis or assess treatment
• Distinguish between physiological and psychological disorders, and diagnose them
accordingly
SKILLS A PSYCHIATRIC NURSE SHOULD
HAVE
• Active Listening
Pay full attention to what others have to say, take the time to understand the points being conveyed,
ask reasonable questions, and don't interrupt at inappropriate times

• Critical thinking
Using logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions,
conclusions, or approaches to the problem being handled

• Reading Comprehension
Understand sentences and paragraphs written in working documents.

• Social sensitivity
Be aware of other people's reactions, then understand why they act the way they do.

• Talking
Talk to other people to convey information effectively
ABILITIES THAT A PSYCHIATRIC OFFICER
MUST HAVE
• Medicine and Dentistry - Knowledge of the information and techniques needed to diagnose
and treat human injuries, diseases and disabilities. This includes symptoms, treatment
alternatives, drug properties and interactions, and preventive health measures.
• Oral Comprehension - The ability to listen to and understand information and ideas
conveyed through spoken words and sentences
• Oral Expression - The ability to communicate information and ideas when speaking, so that
others can understand what is being said
• Problem Sensitivity - The ability to tell when something is wrong or may be wrong. This
does not involve solving problems, just knowing if there is a problem.
• Rapid Reaction - the ability to respond quickly (with a hand, finger or foot) to a signal
(sound, light, picture) when the signal appears.
