• Continuous passive motion (CPM) is a therapy in w
hich a machine is used to move a joint without the
patient having to exert any effort.
• The idea behind CPM machines is that they increas
e range of motion.
• They provide sessions of continuous motion for join
ts that a person is unable to move freely.
• People may experience pain when trying to move their join
t after undergoing surgery. This can cause them to avoid m
oving the joint, which can result in stiffness, a loss of motio
n, and the development of scar tissue.
Indications:
• stable fracture
• Arthroplasty.
• Ligament reconstruction.
• Tendon reconstruction.
• Synovectomy.
• Burns.
• Stroke.
Contra-indications
• Unstable fracture.
• Active infection.
• Fused joint.
• Epilepticseizure.
• Inflammatory arthritis
Precautions:-
• Positioning.
• alignment and monitoring.
• External fixation device.
Durations and frequency:-
• 24 hrs per day for as long as month
• To as little as 6 hrs a day for as long as month.
