DRUG UTILIZATION REVIEW (DUR)
• Drug utilization review (DUR) also referred to as Drug Utilization
Evaluation (DUE) or medication utilization evaluation (MUE) ,are
defined as an authorized, structured, ongoing review of health care
provider prescribing, pharmacist dispensing, and patient use of
medication.
• DURs involve comprehensive review of patients prescription and
medication data before, during and after dispensing to ensure appropriate
medication decision making and positive patients outcomes.
• Along with MUE, DUE and DUR, it came in year 1969.

• Doctors Hospital partners with Pak National Pharmacy to supply
patients with their medication needs. The pharmacy within Doctors
Hospital is open 24 hours a day 7 days a week.  It is located on the
first floor near the Emergency ward. The pharmacy keeps in stock
close to 8000 brand name and generic medications that can be
administered intravenously or orally.
• In addition to the main pharmacy there are numerous satellite
pharmacies within Doctors Hospital that serve the Intensive Care
Units and the Cancer Center. Chemotherapy drugs for the cancer
centre.
Chemotherapy drugs for the cancer center are stored in pharmaceutical
grade refrigerators. The pharmacists at Doctors Hospital conduct checks
and balances on the recommended dosages on medications prescribed by
the doctors to ensure safety and quality.
• An e-prescription system similar to systems used at an
international level will be launching soon in 2016. For out of
town patients home delivery services are available through a
partnership with TCS for next day delivery.

• The Department of Pharmacy Services, GTTH primarily comprises of four core sections:
Outpatient pharmacy (OPD), In-patient pharmacy (IPD), Clinical pharmacy, Store and
Procurement.  The Department of Pharmacy Services aims to optimize patient care and
improve patient quality of life with the provision of quality and cost effective medicines /
Health aids and advance Pharmaceutical Patient care / Medication Management Use services. 
GTTH Pharmacy initiated its services in January 2015, after joint efforts of Ghurki Trust
Teaching Hospital and Lahore Pharmacy College, Lahore Medical and Dental College Lahore.
The Department of Pharmacy Services acknowledge with gratitude the technical consultation
services of Dr. Muhammad Tahir Aziz, Ex Associate Director Pharmacy and Ambulatory
Services, Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital & Research Center (SKMCH & RC)

 Introduction:
 The Department of Pharmacy Services at MAROOF International Hospital is providing state-
of-the-art pharmacy services with a mission to provide compassionate, ethical, accessible, and
high quality pharmacy services to our customers. The Department takes pride in providing
high-tech state-of-the-art professional services to our patients round-the-clock, which includes
in-patients as well as ambulatory care.
 Medical staff:
 The Pharmacy Department is staffed with a full-time Manager Pharmacy, two Senior
Pharmacists, three full-time staff Pharmacists, Pharmacy Technicians and Pharmacy Support
Officers.
 Facilities and service:
 The Pharmacy Department is a full service centralized inpatient hospital pharmacy. Services are
provided for all inpatients as well as those patients served by our outpatient service departments
and clinics. Hospital & Clinical pharmacists function as integral members of health care teams at
MAROOF International Hospital, working with physicians to achieve desired therapeutic
outcomes, prevent or minimize drug-related problems, and improve medication use.
The Pharmacy Department maintains a complete and comprehensive computerized patient drug
profile on all patients. Clinical consultations are provided for patients and physicians as requested.
Specifically, the department of pharmacy is responsible for:
 The specifications of quality for procurement of all drugs
 The preparation and distribution of all drugs.
 The control and management of drug costs.
 The monitoring and assurance of quality of drug use.
 The evaluation of drug literature and the communication of drug and disease related information.
 The application of professional and scientific principles in the selection, use, administration and

forecasting the needs of drugs and consumables and plays a vital role in
promoting rational, cost-effective drug usage through an efficient delivery
system. With dispensing around 900,000 items in one month makes this
department one of the busiest department in the hospital.
