Delivery 2014 – 2019

 Completed preparation of 66 projects;

 Project volume of around EUR 7.9bn;
 Good number of water supply and
wastewater collection/treatment projects
(compliance driven);
 Additional ‘special’ projects addressing
• Flood protection and risk mgmt.,
• Protection against coastal erosion,
• Disaster management systems
(incl. emergency communication
networks, equipment & buildings
 Delivered an additional 15 strategic and
horizontal assignments;
2021-27 Policy areas

PO2: Greener, carbon-free Europe (selected items):

• Adaptation to climate change measures, prevention

and management of climate related risks:
• Floods, Fires, Storms & draughts, earthquakes,
• Permanent changes of water resources.

• Smart water management:

• Drinking Water Supply and efficiency measures,
• Leakage reduction, climate adaptation measures,
• Wastewater collection, treatment and reuse.

Case Study - Poland
Warsaw water supply
and wastewater
Enhancing urban
resilience against
climate change

4
Case Study Warsaw - I

Investment objectives Link to PO 2 (2021 – 2027)

• Adaptation of water and → Climate change adaptation measure
wastewater infrastructure to and strengthening urban resilience
climate changes
• Resource efficiency → Innovation & low carbon Europe
• Security of water supply → Water for human consumption,
• Storm water management, → Prevention and management of
stronger flood resilience climate related risks: Floods
• Wastewater collection → Directive Compliance
Case Study Warsaw - II
Investment scope:
• Water supply
o WTP rehabilitation and extension;
o New water mains and distribution
network – 25 km;

• Waste water collection and treatment

o WWTP modernization;
o New retention tank 70.000 m3
o Rehabilitation and construction of
large DN collectors – 49 km;
o New secondary network – 63 km
o Storm water retention
o RTC system

Investment figures:
Cost: EUR 431m (excl. VAT)
EU-grant: EUR 274m
Company budget: EUR 256m
Case Study Warsaw - III
Achievement of Project “Warsaw Water and climate change”:

• Reduction of “water stress” and water deficits through ability to

secure supply of compliant potable water across city districts;
• Modernization of existing wastewater treatment facilities, new
connection and directive compliance increase;
• Protection of Vistula river from direct overflows by retention and
Real Time Assets management;
• Innovation: make systems more
energy efficient and/or more
operationally sustainable;
• Affordable medium to long term
consumer tariffs;
• Established Hydro-modeling tool
for future assets management.
Case Study - Malta
Towards a Net Zero
Impact Water Utility:
Ensuring Integrated
Water Resource
Management

8
Case Study Malta - I

Project objective: Link to PO 2 (2021 – 2027)

• Harmonize drinking water quality → Water for human consumption,
• Reduce groundwater abstraction → Water resource conservation and
practice and improve water quality climate change adaptation measure
• Polished water for irrigation → Reuse / circular economy,
• Lower sea water intrusion → Water management
• Reduce pumping energy cons. → Efficiency and low carbon Europe
• Extend wastewater collection → Directive Compliance
Case Study Malta - II
Project scope:
• Modernize desalination plants and extend their capacity;
• Measures to optimize drinking water quality and to reduce
quantity of groundwater abstraction;
• Extend and optimize drinking water distribution system;
• Extend distribution network for tertiary treated polished water
for reuse in irrigation which further reduces the pressure of the
depleting groundwater resources of the Maltese islands;
• Extend/optimize sewerage network with link to existing WWTP.

Project figures:
Cost: EUR 164m (excl. VAT)
EU-grants: EUR 89m
State budget: EUR 55m
Water company: EUR 20m
Case Study Malta - III

Achievement of Project “Towards a Net Zero Impact Water Utility”:

• Ability to drink compliant potable water across islands;

• Full utilization of existing wastewater treatment facilities and
production of highly polished water for re-use for irrgation;
• Enhanced protection of groundwater and its sustainable use;
• Carbon emission neutrality;
• Affordable medium to long term consumer tariffs;
• An increasingly financially self standing water company.
