Misery by Anton Chekhov is one of the most

famous works of the author and one of the saddest
short stories written in the twentieth century. The
title of the story does justice to the theme of the
story, which is of loneliness, misery, and the need to
communicate one’s feelings. This story shall explore
the overall message and provide an analysis of

considered to be among the greatest writers of
short stories in history.

The setting of the story takes place in
Russia during the cold, harsh winter. It
emphasizes the type of situation that Iona
is going through in the story. The
harshness of the winter snow is related to
the lack of sorrow that is presented by the
people he encounters.
Plot of story:
In one word, the title reviews the attitude
the story has, and leaves the reader to
think about the roughness of human
nature. "Misery" depicts the devastating
sorrow of Iona Potapov, a Russian sleigh-
driver, and his irrelevant tries to share with
strangers the misery   in the loss of his son.

Thus from this discussion it might safely be concluded that the short story by Anton Chekhov
analyses the nature of the fellow human beings who seem to berate and belittle the grief of a
father who has recently lost his son while an animal who doesn’t have ability to express the
feelings or provide the needed compassion through the medium of speech tends to relate to
the grief of the humans by simple gestures and display of certain gestures.
