Abstract
Being a tour guide now becomes a good job. Since
travelling abroad becomes a trend in society, many
travelers need a person who guides them in the country
that they visited. English is a common language
spoken in many countries. So, it is important for those
who want to be a tour guide to master the English
language.
Rationale
This course is designed for people aged about 18 - 23 years
old who are wishing to be a tour guide in Indonesia.
This basically deals with oral communication skill to be
able to explain the destinations in the countries to the
travelers.
it provides the basic communication of how to explain the
destinations, how to welcome the travelers, how to perform
information about places of interest, and how to ask and
answer to required questions.
It also seeks to give them the confidence on explaining
something in English effectively to achieve the goals

Need Analysis
Learners’ necessities
The learners’ need more knowledge about
English for supporting their skills. They
should develop their speaking skill in
order to make them to be able to guide the
tourists that come to Indonesia.
Learners’ lacks
The learners have difficulty to pronounce
English well like a native.
Their vocabulary is also limited
especially vovabulary about tourism.
They also have no confindence to speak
in English because of their limited
vocabulary.
Learners’ wants

 The learners want to develop their speaking skill in


order to be able to communicate with tourists.
 They want their English knowledge improved,
especially their vocabulary and their pronunciation.
 They want to know how to guide tourists in English.
 They want to be able to explain well the places to the
tourists.
 They do not want the tourists feel uncomfortable
because of misunderstanding when they communicate
with tourists.
Environment Analysis
The learners
The learners are male and female, aged
between 18-23 years old.
 Their speaking skill is in intermediate level.
 They can pronouce well the common words.
 They want to join the course because they
want to have knowledge how to guide the
tourists and communicate with them well.
The teachers
The teachers are professionals who have
graduated from English Teacher Training
Faculty. Most of them were graduated from
S1, but they have great English proficiency.
The teachers also have experiences in
teaching process, because most of them have
already worked in some private courses.
The situation
It consists of 10-15 learners.
The class completed with LCD and AC
Provided white boards, markers, tables, desks,
chairs, and cabinets.
The teachers also use both of course book and
videos
 The course will be about 6 months, and there
will be twice meeting in a week. The time that
is needed to construct one meeting is about 90
minutes each (2x45 minutes).
Entry and Exit Level
Entry Level

Before starting the learning process, we


have to know the learners’ present
knowledge by giving thema placement test.
This test is regarding to oral and written
tests. From that test, we know that most of
learners have good enough in English,
because they have learned English before.
Most of their English skill is intermediate.
Exit Level

After finishing the course, the learners


are expected to be able to communicate
using English when they are as tour
guide. The learners are also able to greet
the tourists, offer help, make an
appointment with tourist, explain places,
rules, safety, and etiquettes clearly.

Goal of the Course
General
The learners are able to use English speaking skill.
The learners’ vocabulary is improving.
 
Spesific
The learners’ vocabulary especially about tourism is
improving.
They are able to improve speaking skills to communicate
with tourists.
They are able to greet to tourists.
They are able to offer help.
They are able to make appointments
They are able to explain intinerary ,places, rules, safety,
and etiquettes clearly.
They are able to answer questions from tourists.
Evaluation
Placement test or pre-test at

Conclusion
Based on the discussion above, we can conclude as
follows:
1. A tour guide has to master some phrases and words
dealing with language that can be used for explaining
anything to the tourists.
2. This English program uses a kind of syllabus, that is
situational syllabus.
3. In applying the situational syllabus, the teacher sets
up imaginary situations and the learners' will use these
situations to practice their speaking skill.
