Modern Period
“This is start 1901( 1901 – 1945)
which the years of
Queen Victoria’s
Death and the end of the second world War in 1945.“

 The Edwardian Period (1901-1910) is named for King Edward VII and
spans the time from Queen Victoria's death (1901) to the beginning of
World War I (1914). During this time, the british empire was at its height
and the wealthy lived lives of materialistic luxury. However, four fifths of the
English population lived in squalor. The writings of the Edwardian Period
reflect and comment on these social conditions.

  The Georgian Period (1910-1936). refers to the period of British


Literature that is named for the reign of George V Many writers of the
Edwardian Period continued to write during the Georgian Period. This
era also produced a group of poets known as the Georgian poets.
Georgian poetry tends to focus on rural subject matter and is traditional in
technique and form.
Introduction
The Modern Period applies to British literature written
since the beginning of World War I in 1914. The authors of
the Modern Period have experimented with subject matter,
form, and style and have produced achievements in all
literary genres. Poets of the period include Yeats, T.S. Elliot,
Dylan Thomas and Seamus Heaney. Novelists include James
Joyce, D.H. Lawrence, and Virginia Woolf. Dramatists include
Noel Coward and Samuel Beckett.

The trend of modernism emerged after the end of the First
World War. They includes:

-Surrealism
-Cubism
-Dadaism
-Futurism
-Expressionism
-Imagism
-Symbolism

a) Modern English poetry
Modern English Poetry is a sort of revolution against the
traditional thoughts and types of the Victorian era poetry.
b) Modern English novels
They rein the literature in the initial three decades of the
twentieth century, these years are known as the golden period of
modernist novel.
c) The development of 20th century English drama
George Bernard Shaw and Oscar Wilde were the most known,
praised and celebrated drama writers of the nineteenth century.
They were highly popular in the last decade of the century. One
can say that they marked the beginning of the modern drama.
However, these two eminent writers never brought many
variations or innovations in the writing techniques and types.

The roots of modern period emerged in the middle of the
nineteenth century. And rather locally, in France in literature
and painting.
The avant-garde was that modernism was called at first, and
term remained to describe movement which identfy
themselves as attempting to overthrow some aspect of
tradition.
In the beginning of the 20th century is an extreamly convenient
starting point. It saw the end of queen victoria’s reign,
making a symbolic break from the preceding century.
