Barranquilla's
Carnival 
Barranquilla's Carnival is one of
Colombia's most important folkloric
 celebrations, and one of the biggest
carnivals in the world.
The carnival has traditions that date
back to the 19th century.

Four days before Holy
Month, Barranquilla decks
itself out to receive national
and foreign tourists and joins
together with the city's
inhabitants to enjoy four
days of intense festivities.

DANCES Cultural Masterpiece of the
Many styles of Colombian Nation
music are also performed, The Carnival of Barranquilla
most prominently cumbia, was proclaimed a Cultural
and instruments include Masterpiece of the Nation
drums and wind ensembles. by Colombia's National
Congress in 2002.

Battle of the
Flowers
× The Carnival starts on the Saturday before the 
Ash Wednesday with the Battle of the Flowers
which is considered one of the main activities.
× The Battle of the Flowers is a parade with floats,
dance groups, and costumed groups. The parade is
headed by a float from which the queen of the
carnival throws flowers while dancing accompanied
by a large entourage of princes and princesses.

The Grand Parade
Then, The Great Parade (La Gran Parada) on Sunday.

The festivities include the torito folk dances, the dance of


the Garabato, and the dances of the hilanderas.

Creativity and luxury will be on this journey, more than


200 groups will display their choreographies, costumes
and makeup.

Monday is marked by an Orchestra


Festival with Caribbean and Latin bands.
The festival involved various categories
and groups that compete for the coveted
Golden Congo.

Joselito's funeral
Tuesday signals the end of the carnival,
announced by the burial of Joselito
Carnaval, who is mourned by everyone.

Joselito is the most representative


character of the Barranquilla Carnival;
he symbolizes gaiety and festiveness,
and dies after four days of intense
partying
