the menstrual cycle in order. An egg starts to mature in the ovaries. Soft lining of the uterus starts to build up. Ovulation (release of an egg) occurs around day 14 of the cycle. Egg cell moves along the oviduct towards the uterus. If an egg cell meets a sperm cell, fertilization occurs. The uterus can feed the fertilized cell. Pregnancy occurs. If the egg is not fertilized, the lining of the uterus breaks down around 14 days after ovulation. In menstruation, the soft lining of the uterus breaks apart. Uterus lining passes out of the vagina along with some blood. Menstruation lasts for approx. 3-7 days. The cycle starts again with another ‘period’. The cycle stops if a woman becomes pregnant.
