WATER CRISIS

Importance
• A basic need after air for human survival
• Every living things need water for their survival
• Bathing, washing, cleaning etc.,
• Industries too need water for fabricating ,cooling
diluting etc.,
Main sources of water
• Underground water-Groundwater is crucial for
India's water security. it takes up over 80% of
total water usage in India.
• Surface water-rivers, wells , canals etc., -irrigation
and industrial needs
• Rain harvesting methods( negligible )
Reasons for water crisis:
• Man made overtakes Natural causes
• Water pollution- Most of the sources of water in
rural areas are terribly polluted due to poor
sanitation and lack of waste treatment plants
• Deforestation
• Improper water recycling
• Greed , corruption..,
India is not running out of
water whereas water is
running out of India without
extracting its full potential
benefits.
How to over come water crisis?
• Inter-linking of rivers
• Water recycling
• Magic soak pits
INTER-LINKING OF RIVERS:
• It is a large scale project that aims to effectively
use water resources by linking Indian rivers by a
network of reservoirs and canals so that we can
divert the flood water to the water shortage areas
• It is first proposed by SIR ARTHUR COTTON in
order to hasten imports and exports as well as
overcome water shortages in southeastern India
The Inter-link project has been split into three parts:

• northern Himalayan rivers inter-link component-14

interlinking projects
• southern Peninsular component -16 interlinking
projects
• intrastate rivers linking component-37 interlinking
projects
• Food security
• Protect regions from floods and droughts
• The average rainfall in India is about 4,000 billion
cubic meters. However, most of it comes over a 4-
month period – June to September.
• Ganga water can be reached to the southern most
part of India through interlinking of rivers
• Ken-Betwa Inter-Linking of Rivers project. This
project is the first ever inter-state river linking
project in India.
Limitations:
• The project needs an investment of Rs 11 lakh
crore (9% of Gross National Income) over a period
of ten years.
• The Himalayan rivers also belong to our
neighbouring countries.
• States that have surplus water are not ready to
forego their water resources due to political and
administrative reasons.
WATER RECYCLING
• Most of the water has been lost due to improper
recycling of used water
• Water recycling can almost meet upto 60%of our
daily needs.
• It had been practically proved in SINGAPORE ,
they are using the retreated water for their daily
needs.
• PUB(Public utilities board of Singapore)
Collect every drop of water
Reuse water endlessly
Desalinate seawater
• They had met the standards that are kept by WHO
• The retreated water is known as NEWater also
considered as third tap of country
• Non-Potable Use:
As it is ultra-clean, NEWater is used mainly for industrial
and cooling purposes at wafer fabrication plants which
require water quality that is even more stringent than
water for drinking.
• Indirect Potable Use:
During dry periods, NEWater is added to reservoirs to
blend with raw water. The raw water from the reservoir is
treated at the waterworks before it is supplied to
consumers as tap water.
Magic soak pits
• Waste water management is a huge challenge in
rural areas.
• Lack of infrastructure for waste management leads
to unhygienic living conditions giving rise to
diseases and unhealthy situations.
• Nanded District of Maharashtra has uniquely taken
over the task of making the villages mosquito free
with the help of Mahatma Gandhi NREGA.
• construction of soak-pit
required dig a pit around 4ft
x 4ft x 4ft followed by laying
down of stone boulders at
the bottom. a cement tank
was used to collect water.
• In this process, used water coming out after domestic
use through pipes is initially collected in the cement
tank of about 2 to 3 ft diameter and 2 to 3 ft high
• The stone boulders are again laid in the pit
surrounding. Cement tank is covered by the lid
followed by a polythene sheet that is spread over the
magic pit. The whole setup is afterwards covered with
soil and is concealed to the naked eye.
• it paved way for neat and clean surrounding with dry
gutters thus depriving mosquitoes and flies of their
breeding ground.
• It also increases the underground water.
• The government also giving subsidies to construct
magic soak pits in order to make mosquitos free and to
store the rain water.
• Engineers role in saving water?
• Politicians role in saving water?
• Students role in saving water?
• No one has anything to do in this crisis ,WE as
HUMAN BEINGS should act together without
complaining others.
•DON’T TAKE IT AS A RITUAL
TAKE IT AS AN
OPPURTUNITY TO SAVE
WATER
