HISTORY
 Sustainable development strategy of 1990’s made CSR an integral
part for EU countries
 In 2001 European Commission defined CSR as a concept which
integrates environmental and social concerns of their community in
business operations on a voluntary basis(EU,2001).
 EU defined CSR as a voluntary action rather compulsion in 2001,
2003 and in 2006 without legalizing it.
 After Global economic crisis in 2008, developing a framework for
CSR created a lot of challenges
Problems faced by CSR in Europe & UK
 The fast development from the socialist system to a competitive market
environment of the new eastern and central European Countries has driven
many organizations and business companies' unexpected growth, causing
many socio - environmental concerns.
 It has been an extremely challenging for companies in the  European
Union that the particularly demanding EU economic, social conditions and
environmental standards framework be adapted.
 The economic crisis and its social impact has also distracted citizens from
the legal and ethical performance of companies due to loss of trust in
corporations.
EUROPEAN COMMISSION STRATEGY ON
CSR
 Commission signifies importance of CSR and encourages companies to
comply with global standards and regulations.
 The EU’s policy is built on its 2011 renewed strategy for CSR, which aims
to align European and global approaches to CSR
 CSR awareness and diffusion of best practises by incorporating CSR in
education, training and research will be vital for EU countries.
 The strategy also enhances the self-regulation and environmental and
social effective monitoring procedures of firms
Four Principles of CSR Standards by UK
Government
 Environment
Commitment to reducing the direct impact of wastes, emissions, and consumptions
 People
Creating workspaces with equal opportunities for everyone and professional
development
 Procurement
Most of supply chain contracts will be through government frameworks and audits
 Community
A society culture which promotes volunteering, skill development and improving
life
Responsible Business Conduct (RBC)

 This is another term utilized by EU defined as making a positive

contribution to economic, social and environment goals of society
and an objective of achieving sustainable development (Bule &
Less, 2016)
 Commission expects the companies to be socially and ethically
responsible
 Human rights are increasingly stressed in RBC similar to CSR.
 Responsible Business term was introduced to promote trust and
relationship between firms and consumers.
Sustainable Europe 2030 Goals & CSR

 Currently EU countries have focused on highest environmental standards along

with ambitious climate policies. Some of the main highlights of this strategy
includes the following (CSR Europe Strategy, n.d)
 Incubationramework and facilitating collaboration practices among firms
1. Help the companies to lay a foundation through providing support
2. Community level approach to promote both basic and advanced level learning
3. Advocate the idea of level-playing died for everyone regardless of their resources
and capitals
4. Promoting research, innovation and enhanced monitoring

goals of carbon emission reduction by 2050. Companies will be made
accouountable in this regard
 UK government plans to bann all Petrol and Diesel vehicles by
2040. Therefore, steps to facilitate vehicles with renewable energy
source will be promoted. According to Bloomberg, 55pc of new car

environmental conservation
 Serving the needy citizens has to be priotizied to eradicate hunger and poverty
 Instead of generic policies every country should draft their own objectives and
goals related to CSR
 CSR legalization hasn’t been focused in EU countries. However, a strong
inclination has always been directed towards environmental and human rights
protection laws
