Importance of Correlation
Correlation helps us determine the degree of
relationship between variables. It enables us to
make our decision for the future course of
actions, future planning and forecasting.

 Forecasting without any prior correlation

analysis may prove to be defective, less reliable
and more uncertain. If it is based upon the result
of correlation analysis, it will be more reliable.
Calculating the Pearson’s Correlation
Coefficient
INSTRUCTIONS
 The objective of the activity is to solve for the Pearson’s
Correlation Coefficient by using the Statistics feature of MS
Office Excel.
 Four students will be designated as team leaders.
 Each team will watch a video to further hone their knowledge
in using the Excel’s Statistics add-ins online.
 The teams are given 5 minutes to watch the video 20 minutes
to solve the problem.

CALCULATE AND ANALYZE
THE CORRELATION
COEFFICIENT BETWEEN
THE NUMBER OF STUDY
HOURS AND THE NUMBER
OF SLEEPING HOURS OF
DIFFERENT STUDENTS
INSTRUCTIONS
 The leader will then pass the instructions to the student right
beside him/her to do the activity. Once done, the leader will
be accompanied by the one he/she has just taught to pass on
the instructions to the next student.
 The process will continue until all of the students are done
with their activity.
 SNOWBALL EFFECT in action!
Calculate and analyze the correlation
coefficient and determine the scatter plot
between the number of study hours and
the number of sleeping hours of different
students
Practical applications of
correlation analysis in daily living
You can find the relationships between two variables such
as…
 Studying time with sleeping time
 Scores and/or Grades in two of your subjects (example
Math and Science)
 Daily allowance and weight and the possibilities are
endless
Thanks a lot class… Stay Safe in
see you again in the next
