AUTONOMY

WHAT IS AUTONOMY?
AUTONOMY IS …
The state of existing on acting separately from
others.
Someone who’s capable of making decision
on their own behalf, but doesn’t mean that they
have the right to do what ever they want or
disobey laws and regulations.
IMMANUEL
KANT

 He claims that the property of

the rational will is autonomy.
 Autos + nomos = Autonomy
 Heteros + nomos =
heteronomy
The choice that can be determined by pure reason is
called free choice. That which is determined only by
inclination( sensible impulse, stimulus) would be animal
choice ( arbritirium brutum). Human choice, in contrast
is a choice that may indeed be affected but not
determined by impulses, and is therefore in
itself( without an acquired skill of reason) not pure, but
can nevertheless be determined todo actions from pure
will.
