Synthesis of mechanism

Synthesis – Finding probable designs of mechanism. It is design or creation of mechanism to

Produce a desired output motion for a given input motion.

Or It will create no of solution for given problem

Or determination of proportions of a mechanism for given input and output motion

Application of synthesis-
1) Designing a cam to give follower a known motion from displacement diagram

2) Determination of no of teeth on members in gear train to produce desired velocity ratio.

Dimensional synthesis are again categorised as
1) Function generation – It correlates rotary or sliding motion of input and output links. The
motion of output and input links are prescribes by an arbitrary function y = f(x). Means if
input link moves by x, output link moves by y = f(x) for the range x 0 < x < xn+1 In case of rotary
motions of input and output links, when input link rotates through an angle theta output link
moves through phi angle corresponding to the value of dependent variable y = f(x).

2) Path generation – It is defined as control of a point in the plane such that it follows some
prescribed path. Or point is guided along a prescribed path this is typically accomplished with
at least four bars, wherein a point on the coupler traces the desired path
Ex. Geneva mechanism

3) Motion generation – It is defined as control of a line in the plane such that it assumes some
prescribed set of sequential positions or
Mechanism is designed to guide a rigid body in a prescribed path.
Ex. Control of a bucket on a bulldozer.
