The Learning Environment

The document discusses the importance of a positive learning environment. It states that the learning environment consists of both the physical setting as well as the psychological climate created through interactions between teachers and students. A positive environment improves attention, reduces anxiety, and supports student regulation. It fosters higher motivation and better learning outcomes. Specifically, the physical environment includes classroom conditions while the psychological climate depends on safety, relationships, and support for learning. The new normal environment blends online and in-person learning to allow education to continue safely during the pandemic.

The Learning Environment

“To heredity, the child owes his possibilities.

However, to environment, he owes the realization of
these possibilities”
The learning environment
consists of the physical
environment as well as the
psychological atmosphere or the
socio-emotional climate which
mainly a product of the interaction
and relationship between teacher and
students and among the students.
What is the importance of learning environment?

The importance of positive classroom

environment helps improve attention,
reduce anxiety, and supports
emotional and behavioral regulation
of students. When educators foster a
positive learning culture, learners are
more likely to acquire higher
motivation that leads to wonderful
learning outcomes.
PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT
The physical environment includes the physical condition of
the classroom, the arrangement of furniture, seating arrangement,
the classroom temperature and lightning.

We enjoy learning in a neat, tidy, orderly, spacious, well-

lighted, well-ventilated and quiet classroom. We can’t learn in
dirty, topsy-turvy, warm, poorly ventilated and noisy classrooms.
Importance of School Facilities in Education

When choosing a school for their children, parents should consider the
facilities provided by each school in order to select the best school for their
children’s development. The facilities of a school impact the overall
learning process as well as the mental and physical growth of the students.
These also affect the academic performance of the student to some extent.
Five basic facilities that every
school should provide to the
student are:

• Acoustics and Noise

• Ventilation and Air Quality
• Lighting
• Temperature control
• Space and size of classrooms
PSYCHOLOGICAL CLIMATE
Psychological climate is defined as individual student’s perceptions of their environment. Researchers
agree that in addition to onducive physical environment, the favorable school climate includes:

1. Safety (e.g. rules and norms; physical safety; social-emotional safety)

2. Relationships (respect for diversity, school connectedness/engagement; social support- adults;

social support – student; leadership); and

3. Teaching and learning (e.g. social, emotional, ethical and civic learning; support for learning;
professional relationships)
Pine and Home (1990) described a facilitative
learning environment for learning. It is one:

1. which encourages people to be active.

2. which promotes and facilitates the

individual’s discovery of the personal
meaning of idea.

3. which emphasizes the uniquely personal

and subjective nature of learning.
4. in which difference is good and desirable.

5. which consistently recognizes people’s right to

make mistakes.

6. which tolerates ambiguity.

7. in which evaluation is a cooperative process

with emphasis on self-evaluation.

8. which encourages openness of self rather than

concealment of self.
9. in which people are encouraged to trust in
themselves as well as in external sources.

10. in which people feel they are respected.

11. in which people feel they are accepted.

12. which permits confrontation.

13. provides conducive learning environment

necessary in the full development of the
cognitive and appetitive faculties of the
learner.
The New Normal Learning
Environment
This refers to a learning delivery that
combines face-to-face with any, or a mix
of, Modular Distance Learning, and
Online Distance Learning.

Online learning is a form of learning

that takes place via the internet. It allows
the students to study at home and access
educational materials online.
 Blended learning allows the students to set appropriate learning goals as
well as helps them to be responsible for their own learning. Its flexibility
enables individuals to learn at their own pace as they prepare for their future. It
is fit in the time of the COVID-19 pandemic as it ensures that learners will be
able to continue their educational journey at home.

 Now that the education system steadily adapts to the new normal, online
learning helps the learners continue their education safely at home. It is
convenient for students since they do not have to go out anymore to attend
their classes and worry about their school allowance and transportation
expenses. All learning materials can also be accessed online thus making it
easier for them to study their lessons.
Learning Model
For online learning, the most institutions utilizes both synchronous and asynchronous
learning.
• Synchronous learning in online education is when the students are all engaged in learning
at the same time. Learners can be in the same online environment such as a web conference
where they can interact with their instructor as well as their classmates. And to guide
learners every step of the way.

• Asynchronous learning is when the students and instructors are online but without real-
time interaction. In this instance, the students study online at their own pace. An example of
this method is creating online content like pre-recorded videos with the instructors
explaining the module.
