What is an atmosphere?
● Atmosphere is a protective layer of gases that shelters all
life on Earth, keeping temperatures within a relatively
small range and blocking out harmful rays of sunlight.
● The atmosphere:
○ Contains the air we breathe
○ Helps retain the Sun’s heat and prevents it from
escaping back into space
○ Protects life from harmful radiation from the sun
○ Plays a major role in Earth’s water cycle
○ Helps keep the climate on Earth moderate
The Earth has FIVE layer
of Atmosphere.
those are:

1. Troposphere
2. Stratosphere
3. Mesosphere
4. Thermosphere
5. Exosphere
TROPOSPHERE

● Troposphere is the lowest layer of the atmosphere.

● It’s closest to Earth.
● This is where the weather occurs in, also most type of the clouds
are found in this layer.
● It is about 12 km in height away from Earth.
● The Troposphere is important because it provides oxygen that we
can breathe.
● Keeps the Earth at a livable temperature.
● The Temperature in Troposphere DECREASES as Altitude
INCREASES.
STRATOSPHERE

• The 2nd layer of the Atmosphere above the

Troposphere.
● Extends approximately 50 km.
● The Temperature generally INCREASES as altitude
INCREASES.
● Where the OZONE LAYER is .
○ The Ozone Layer helps us protect from
Ultraviolet Radiation (UV) from the sun.
MESOSPHERE

• This is the COLDEST Layer of the Atmosphere.

• Found between about 50 and 80 kilometers above the
Stratosphere.
• It burns up most meteors and asteroids before they are able to
reach the Earth's surface.
• Too high for aircraft but too low for a satellite.
THERMOSPHERE

● The Thermosphere is the layer in the Earth’s directly above

the mesosphere and below the exosphere.
● The altitude is 90 km to 1000 km
● It is also considered the atmosphere’s hottest layer, with
temperatures reaching 2000 degree celsius
● The meteorological phenomenon, the Aurora Borealis
(northern Lights) occurs in this layer at heights of 150 km
and above.
EXOSPHERE
● The layer of the atmosphere farthest from Earth
● Temperature in exosphere rises when the Sun hits it with
UV radiation
● The word exosphere is two old Greek words combined:
‘exo’ - outside, and ‘sphaira’=sphere.
● Approximations say it can expand out to 190,0000 km
above the surface of the Earth, about halfway to the
moon.
● Satellites orbit Earth in this layer.
