SYNCHRONOUS COLLABORATION ON GEOGRAPHIC

INFORMATION – CH#5
BY: ABDUL MASHAD (22-10241)
ABSTRACT

 GeoWebEX is an online system for supporting group collaborations.

 The system is developed using open-source technologies.

 GeoWebEX allows integration of geospatial data.

 includes such integrated components as map sharing, audio/video conferencing, real-time chat, georeferenced textual
and graphical annotation.

 GeoWebEX has a lot of applications,

INTRODUCTION

 The concept of collaborative GIS.

 A requirement for geographic information technology.

 GIS is the main technology to support public participation geographic information systems (PPGIS).

 Maps often play a central role for providing visual information.

 A synchronous approach is developed to support collaboration among users

RESEARCH OBJECTIVE
 Study models presents the prototype development of an integrated online synchronous collaborative system.

 Various OSGIS, Web GIS, and OSS-based tools and open mapping APIs.

 Prototype’s components are still in development.

 Study focuses on integration of open-source-based groupware solutions on a virtual GIS-based meeting platform.

 The objective is to improve/increase participants’ involvement and/or aid decision makers in reaching a final
decision.
BACKGROUND AND LITERATURE REVIEW

 Research related to the design.

 Although many efforts have been given to the research.

 Still not much literature available for this field.

 Several prototypes.

 CSCW technique
GEOWEBEX

 Developed from scratch, integrating Google Map API, Open Layers, and flex technologies.

 Significance of real-time GeoWebEX.

 Study explains certain facts or observations.

 Prototype development based on a research project.

 Real-time, robust, easy-to-use, and cost-effective geographically accurate solutions

SIGNIFICANCE OF GEOWEBEX USING REAL-WORLD MOCK CASE
STUDY SCENARIOS

 The GeoWebEX component is a technological breakthrough in the field of geo-information management.

 GeoWebEX is an evolution based on a synchronous collaborative map sharing framework.

 Component also includes chat facility, drawing specific location (point, line, and polygon/area)

 GeoWebEX technology would work with the widely used online WebGIS.
SCENARIOS

 Scenario 1: GeoWebEX—a geo-collaborative approach in controlling epidemic spread.

 Scenario 2: GeoWebEX—a geo-collaborative tool for crime mapping.

USABILITY TESTING AND EVALUATION OF THE GEOWEBEX

 Scenario-based testing approach is used for the usability evaluation of the GeoWebEX prototype.

 Prototype testing and evaluation was initially limited to usability testing.

 Pre-questionnaire and post-questionnaires were developed.

 GeoWebEX major functions - to determine whether/to what extent these functions meet design objectives and
requirements.
STATISTICAL ANALYSIS

 Performed on the user performance data.

 Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS).

 Participant’s characteristics

 Usability indicators
PROBLEMS AND SOLUTIONS

 GeoWebEX is an evolution based on a map sharing component.

 Includes chat facility, drawing specific locations.

 To make the interface eye catching.

 The editing toolbar is used for the demarcation of point, line, and polygon.
CONCLUSION

 GeoWebEX, a Web-centered application facilitates a real-time participation.

 Flexible enough that it may work and facilitate in major kinds of e-governance.

 GeoWebEX prototype application supports real-time integration of data.
