ANAEMIA OF

CHRONIC
DISORDER
Impaired RBC production associated with
chronic diseases.
↓ in proliferation of erythroid progenitors
& impaired iron utilization.
These can be gped.
1.Chronic infections:
osteomyelitis,
bact.endocarditis &
lung abscess etc.
• 2.Chronic immune disorders:
Rheumatoid arthritis,
regional enteritis etc.
• 3.Neoplasms:
Ca. lung,
breast,

Hodgkin lymphoma etc.

Certain inflammatory mediators esp. IL-6,
stimulate an increase in hepatic synthesis
of hepcidin.
Hepcidin-- reduces transfer of iron from
the storage pool to the developing
erythroid precursors in BM, decrease iron
absoption.
Anaemia is mild & symptoms are those of
underlying disease.
Laboratory diagnosis:
1. Anaemia is mild, Hb <9.0g/dl
2.RBCs normochomic normocytic or mild
hypocomic microcytic (MCV rarely <75fl).
3.Both S. iron & TIBC decreased.
4.S.ferritin normal or raised.
5.BM storage iron normal but erythroblast
iron decreased.
