CHAPTER 1
INTRODUCTION
WHAT IS STATISTICS?
Statistics is the science of
1. Collecting (survey, interview etc.)
2. Analyzing (Average, sum, %, probability etc.)
3. Presenting (graphs, tables)
4. Interpreting data for making decisions based on such
analyses (demand for rice will increase/decrease next
year based on last 10 years data)
Types of Statistics
1. Descriptive Statistics
2. Inferential Statistics
Types of Statistics
1.Descriptive Statistics
Consists of methods for organizing, displaying, and
Sample
A portion of the population selected for study.
Census
A survey that includes every member of the population
is called a census.
Sample survey
The technique of collecting information from a portion
Random Sample
A sample drawn in such a way that each element of the population
∑x = ?
SUMMATION NOTATION
Σx = x +x +x +x +x
1 2 3 4 5 = 605
Example 1-1
Find:
(a) ∑x (b) (∑x)² (c) ∑x²
Example 1-1: Solution
(a) ∑x = x1 + x2 + x3 + x4
= 75 + 90 + 125 + 61
= 351 = $351,000
(b) Note that (∑x)² is the square of the sum of all x values.
Thus,
(∑x)² = (351)² = 123,201
Example 1-1: Solution
We can write
m1 = 12 m2 = 15 m3 = 20 m4 = 30
f1 = 5 f2 = 9 f3 = 10 f4 = 16
