• Why Use Food Grade Lubricants
Why should food registered machinery lubricants be used?
• Health and Safety concerns have become the number one focus of attention in
industry, commanding a high level of media interest.
• In the food processing sector in particular, there is a heavy burden on
manufacturers to minimize the risk and impact of food contamination.
• Such incidents can result in product recalls, public notices and negative publicity
let alone potential litigation.
• This could cause serious damage to the company’s reputation and, in extreme
cases, destroy a brand.
• Using appropriate food registered machinery lubricants as an integral part of an
effective quality management process can help reduce those risks and protect the
brand.
• Companies that handle food are obliged to identify, evaluate and manage the risks
to health and such assessments cover the entire supply chain from production to
the consumer’s table.

3
• Legal Requirements

NSF = National Sanitation Foundation

NSF started 1999 with the listing and registration for “Nonfood
Compounds”. Providing a product approval process (Up-to-date,
web-based listing)

Classification for Lubricants and additives:

• H1 Lubricants with incidental contact

• H2 Lubricants with no contact
• H3 Edible oils on process (transportation)

Link: http://www.nsf.org/usda/psnclistings.asp
• NSF H1, H2, H3 Lubricants

NSF = National Sanitation Foundation

The key word is “Incidental Contact”
• The basic definitions on food grade lubricants:
– H1 lubricants are food-grade lubricants used in food-processing environments where
there is the possibility of incidental food contact.
– H2 lubricants are nonfood-grade lubricants used on equipment and machine parts in
locations where there is no possibility of contact.
– H3 lubricants are food-grade lubricants, typically edible oils, used to prevent rust on
hooks, trolleys and similar equipment.
• NSF H1 Registered Lubricants
– NSF H1 registered lubricants must generally be used if, during the process and
before the consumer receives the product, occasional contamination of food by
lubricants cannot be ruled out or prevented with complete certainty.
– NSF H1 lubricants are in practice potential 'indirect food additives' as they may have
incidental contact with food due to leaks, spillages or faults in the equipment.
• How much contamination with a H1 lubricant is acceptable?
– Food-grade lubricants, which are non-toxic, odorless, colorless and tasteless, the
FDA limits lubrication contamination to 10 parts per million or 0.001% or 10mg/kg.

6
• HACCP
• Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points
– Developed by NASA and Pillsbury for the
protection of food stuffs for the astronauts
– Main concept manage and eliminate the
potential for food contamination

• How it applies to Food Grade Lubricants

– Any way that lubricants can contaminate
foods must be addressed
– Food Grade Lubricants should be
segregated from non-food grade lubricants
• HACCP – Hazard Analysis of Critical Control Points
•Typically the result of a HACCP is that a production
site has critical control points and points where no
further action would be required

•For critical processes, usage of H1 lubricants is

mandatory

•For non-critical processes, usage of H2 lubricants is

possible

•The ISO 22000 standard - Food Safety Management

Systems - integrates the HACCP principles, system
management and interactive communication between
organisations in the food supply chain. ISO 22000
specifies the requirements needed for food safety
management for each organisation in the food chain to
ensure the final food is safe for human consumption
• Halal
Halal
• Halal is an Arabic term meaning 'permissible'.
• In English it frequently refers to food that is permissible according to
Islamic law.
• A variety of substances are considered forbidden which includes pork and
pig based products, blood and all intoxicants, including alcohol. The
assessment of whether a lubricant is suitable for Halal is very similar to
that for Kosher.
• The ingredients of the oil or grease are reviewed technically and the
manufacturing facility audited for its internal quality processes and
potential cross contamination. Certificates of conformity are normally
issued.

9
• Kosher/ISO22000
Kosher
• Kosher foods are those that conform to Jewish dietary law.
• Certain animal species are allowed such as cattle, sheep, poultry and fish
whereas pigs and shellfish are not. Foods that contain no dairy or meat
content are known as Parve, examples being most drinks, all fruit and
simple raw vegetables. The assessment of the manufacture and suitability
of a lubricant that confirms to Kosher is made on the formulation and
manufacturing procedure through a technical and religious certification
process. The formulation is assessed on its basic ingredients and the
manufacturing facility is audited on a regular basis to assess the risk of
contamination by non Kosher materials.
