PERMUTATION & COMBINATION

S.S.HARICHANDAN
PERMUTATION:
Introduction:
The number of arrangements
of different things by taking
some or all of them together
at a time is known as
Permutation.
It is denoted as n P r =
Here arrangements of ‘n’
different things by taking ‘r’ at
a time.
The questions on permutation
are coming on the following
factors, such as:
• Digit arrangement
• Letter arrangement
• Seating arrangement
• Circular arrangement
• Beads arrangement
• Rank of the word in
dictionary
DIGIT ARRANGEMENT:
The method to find the number of
arrangements of digits is as follows:
• Take the number of places according to
condition.
• Take the digits at extreme left or right
according to the condition.
• Then if repetition is allowed take those
digits at the other places and if
repetition is not allowed arrange the
places by taking 1 less in all the
subsequent places.
• Then multiply all the number of ways at
the different places as the total number
of arrangements.
EXAMPLE:
How many four digit numbers can
be formed by using the digits 0, 1,
2, 3, 4 & 5
(i)With repetition
(ii)Without repetition
(iii)Nos of even numbers
(iv)Nos of odd numbers
(v)Nos divisible by 4
(vi)Nos divisible by 5
(vii)Nos divisible by 3
(ii)Without repetition
Explanation:
Thousand’s place can be arranged by all
the digits except 0 in 5 ways.
As repetition is not allowed hundred’s
place can be arranged by the rest 5 digits
in 5 ways.
Ten’s place can be arranged by the rest 4
digits in 4 ways.
Unit place can be arranged by the rest 3
digits in 3 ways.
So total number of ways of arrangements
= 5x5x4x3 = 300
(iii)Number of even numbers
If nothing is mentioned whether
repetition is allowed or not it is
based on repetition is allowed.
So let us find the number of
arrangements
(iv)Number of odd numbers
Explanation:
We know that if the digit at the unit
place is an odd digit, the number is
an odd number.
If nothing is mentioned about
repetition is allowed or not, then it
is based on repetition is allowed.
So let us find the number of ways
of arrangements :
Numbers divisible by 4
Explanation:
We know that if the last two digits
of a number are divisible by 4, the
number is divisible by 4.
If it is not mentioned about
repetition is allowed or not, it is
based on repetition is allowed.
LETTER ARRANGEMENT:
The method to arrange the letters in a
word the method is as follows:
Step:1:Count the number of letters in the
given words.
Step:2:By considering all letters as
different letters, n number of letters in n
places can be arranged in n! ways.
Step:3:If there is the repetition of the
letters, divide n! by the product of the
factorial value of the number of times
about repetition of the letters.
(iii)If all the vowels and all the consonants
come together
If all the vowels come together take one place
for them and for all the consonants come
together take another place for them.
So in two places they can be arranged in 2!
ways.
4 vowels among themselves can be arranged in
4!ways.
And 6 consonants among themselves can be
arranged in 6!ways.
So the number of ways of arrangements
=

= 6!
SEATING ARRANGEMENT:
The method to find the number of
arrangement of seating is as follows:
• Take the number of places according to
the condition. So in ‘n’ number of
places ‘n’ persons can be arranged in n!
ways.
• And if some particular ‘n’ persons seat
together take one place for them and
for the rest (m-n) persons take that
number of places.
• Then the number of arrangements
• =(m -n+1)!(m-n)!
(i)If they seat at alternate position
As the number of boys is more
than the number of girls, take 5
places for 5 boys in which they can
be arranged in 5! ways.
Among 5 boys there are 4 places
where 4 girls can be arranged in 4!
ways.
So total number of ways of
arrangements = 5!x4!
EXAMPLE:
In how many ways can 5 boys and
4 girls be seated in a row?
And also find out the number of
arrangements
(i)If they seat at alternate position
(ii)If all the boys seat together
(iii)If all the girls do not seat
together
(iv)If all the boys and all the girls
seat together
(v)If no two girls seat together
CIRCULAR ARRANGEMENT:
The number of ways of circular
arrangement is as follows:
In case of a circle there is not
starting or ending point like a row.
So if we start from one point we
have to keep it fix due to which
there is no arrangement. So the
arrangement occurs in the rest
points.
Therefore the number of
arrangements in a circle having n
points = (n-1)!
If a particular number of persons seat
together:
If a particular n1 number of persons seat
together take one place for them and for
the rest persons take that number of
places for them.
Suppose total number of persons n and n1
persons seat together take one place for
n1 persons and for the rest persons take
(n – n1) places. So total number of places
i.e. 1+ (n-n1)
Then make the arrangements as [1+ (n-
n1)]! ways and for n1 persons n1! Ways.
So total number of arrangements = [1+ (n-
n1)] !n1!
EXAMPLE:
In how many ways can the Prime
Ministers of 7 different countries be
seated around a circular table?

And also find out the number of

arrangements
(i)If the Prime Minister of China,
Pakistan and Afghanistan seat
together.
(ii)If the Prime Minister of India and
Pakistan do not seat together
(i)If the Prime Minister of China, Pakistan
and Afghanistan seat together.
(ii)If the Prime Minister of India and Pakistan do
not seat together
BEADS ARRANGEMENTS:
The method to find the number of
arrangements of beads in a necklace is as
follows:
The shape of a necklace is circular so the
number of arrangements of n number of
beads is (n-1)!.
Again as there is one open end and
another closed end, the beads can be
arranged from both ends up to half of the
necklace.

So the number of arrangements of n

number of beads in a necklace =1/2 (n-1)!
EXAMPLE:
In how many ways 12 beads
can be arranged in a
necklace?
RANK OF THE WORD IN
DICTIONARY:
The method is as follows:
The words in a dictionary arranged in
alphabetical order so arrange the letters in
alphabetically.
• Keep fix the letters alphabetically at the
first place and arrange the rest.
• Go up to that letter from which the
original word starts with and mark after
arranging the first letter which letter/
letters are coming in the next places by
default and then arrange the rest .
EXAMPLE:
If the letters of the word CHASM
are rearranged to form 5 letter
words such that none of the word
repeat and the results arranged in
ascending order as in a dictionary
what is the rank of the word
CHASM?
