INTRODUCTION
Actinomycetes in
composting
According to Alexander’s opinion (1961) :
a. the mycelium of the higher actinomycetes has the extensive
branching characteristics of the mould.
b. like the fungi many actinomycetes form an aerial mycelium as
well as conidia.
c. the growth of actinomycetes in liquid culture rarely result in
the turbidity associated with unicellular bacteria rather it occurs
in distinct clumps or pellets and
d. the growth rate of at least some strains is unrestricted and is
not exponential as is the case with bacteria but cubic ,a
characteristics in common with many of the fungi.

Actinomycetes are-
prokaryotic.
unicellular.
about the same size in cross section.
contain peptidoglycan in their cell wall.
sensitive to lysozyme degrading the polysaccharide
backbone of the peptidoglycan in their cell wall.
sensitive to antibacterial but not antifungal
antibiotics.
Actinomycetes resemble bacteria
possess flagella.
possess nucleoids.
Characteristics of fungal cell wall are not
found.
So, we can say that-
Actinomycetes look more like fungi but
their inner structure is bacterial.

Occurance of Actinomycetes
●
Organic matter
●
Recalcitrant (hard to decompose) compounds
●
Resistant material - Humus
Function… …
RESPONSIBLE FOR THE SWEET EARTHY
SMELL IN TILLED SOIL.
CAUSES DISEASE IN PLANT ( ACT AS PLANT
PATHOGENS).
