Lecture for Y1 , 8/11/2020
Objectives:
1- recognize the concept of CBE
2- describe the evolution of CBE
3- recognize the rationale of CBE
CBE:
it is an approach to health profession
education( and in particular medical
education) in which students ,already in the
early phases of their training ,are
confronted with the health problems of the
communities they are supposed to serve in
the future . Educational activities are done
out side the hospital and the college .
CBE is dealing with two problems
1- unequal access to health care. About
60%of the population of the world can not
consult a physician when needed.
Graduates of medical school tend to practice
medicine where opportunities for private
practice exist.
2- the second problem has to do with the
nature of health profession education
itself in that ,particularly medical students
are typically trained within a hospital
context .
their clinical training takes place in
tertiary care hospital that have facilities not
available elsewhere in the country .
Studies show that in the course of training
of medical students , they found that
students see only 1% of the spectrum of
patients normally seen by physicians in
the community.
In response to these problems ,several
organization such as WHO have called
upon the schools for health profession
educations to bring about changes in the
curriculum such that the actions of
graduates will contribute to the improved
health status of the population .
Evolution of CBC
the call for reform in medical education in the
direction of CBE has started since more than
fifty years ,but real implementation took place
in late sixties and early seventies.
COME(community oriented medical education
) is an approach to medical education.
where curriculum is reflecting health
problems of that community.
