ACCELERATIO

NAcceleration is the process where the velocity

changes. Since velocity is a speed and a
direction, there are only two ways for you to
accelerate: change your speed or change your
direction—or change both.

The INITIAL VELOCITY, vi is
the starting velocity of the object
before acceleration causes a
change.

The FINAL VELOCITY is the

last velocity of a given object
after a period of time.
Given: Time= 4 seconds Final Velocity: 22m/s Initial Velocity: 2m/s

Formula: A= Vf – Vi
T
Solution: A= 22m/s - 2m/s = 20m/s
4s 4s
= 5m/s/s or 5m/s2
Given: Time= 1 second Final Velocity: 32m/s Initial Velocity: 30m/s

Formula: A= Vf – Vi
T
Solution: A= 32m/s - 30m/s = 2m/s
1s 1s

= 2m/s/s or 2m/s2
A woman moving on a straight
line speeds up from 2m/s to
30m/s in 7 seconds by her car.
What is her acceleration?

Given: Time= 5 seconds Final Velocity: 30m/s Initial Velocity: 2m/s

Formula: A= Vf – Vi
T
Solution: A= 30m/s - 2m/s = 28m/s
7s 7s

= 4m/s/s or 4m/s2
Answer the following:
1. What do you call the process where the velocity
changes?
2. What is the starting velocity of the object before
acceleration causes a change.
3. What is the last velocity of a given object after a
period of time.
4. A car speeds up from 4m/s to 16 m/s in 8 seconds.
What is it’s acceleration?
5. A truck speeds up from 3 m/s to 24 m/s in 6 seconds.
What is it’s acceleration?
