GMDSS
The Global Maritime Distress
and Safety System (GMDSS) is
an internationally recognized
distress and radio communication
safety system for ships. It is a set
of safety procedures, types of
equipment and communication
protocols used to increase safety
and make it easier to rescue all
distressed ships
What ships are affected by the

mandated for ships internationally by the
International Maritime Organization (IMO) Safety of Life at Sea
Convention (SOLAS), 1974, as amended in 1988, and carries the
force of an international treaty.

• Cargo ships of 300 gross tons travelling on international

voyages or in the open sea.
• All passenger ships carrying more than twelve passengers
when traveling on international voyages or in the open sea

Emergency position-indicating
radio beacon (EPIRB)
is used to alert search and rescue
services in the event of an emergency. It
does this by transmitting a coded
message via the free to use,
multinational Cospas Sarsat network. A
406 MHz distress frequency signal is
sent via satellite and earth stations to the
nearest rescue co-ordination centre.
COMPONENTS OF GMDSS
NAVTEX
Navtex is an international, automated
system for instantly distributing
maritime safety information (MSI)
which includes navigational
warnings, weather forecasts and
weather warnings, search and rescue
notices and similar information to
ships
COMPONENTS OF GMDSS
Satellite

is an object that has been intentionally placed into orbit. These objects are called artificial satellites to
distinguish them from natural satellites such as Earth's Moon. Satellites are used for many purposes. Among
several other applications, they can be used to make star maps and maps of planetary surfaces, and also take
pictures of planets they are launched into. Common types include military and civilian
Earth observation satellites, communications satellites, navigation satellites, weather satellites, and
space telescopes. Space stations and human spacecraft in orbit are also satellites.
COMPONENTS OF GMDSS
High frequency

A GMDSS system may include high-

frequency (HF) radiotelephone and
radiotelex (narrow-band direct printing)
equipment, with calls initiated by digital
selective calling (DSC).
COMPONENTS OF GMDSS
Search and rescue locating device
A SART is a 'search and rescue locating device'
designed to assist in survivor craft location during
search and rescue operations.

The SART is primarily intended for fitment by

SOLAS vessels under carriage requirement rules.
SOLAS fitting rules differ depending on type and
size of vessel and survival craft.
COMPONENTS OF GMDSS
Digital selective calling

Digital Selective Calling (DSC) is a service

that allows to communicate with a vessel or
shore station by making an “individual” call.
With DSC it is no longer required to listen to
all radio messages to see if there is a call or
message for you. DSC is also used to
automatically send distress messages.
Power supply requirements
GMDSS equipment is required to be powered from three
sources of supply:

• ship's normal alternators/generators;

• ship's emergency alternator/generator (if fitted); and
• a dedicated radio battery supply.
GMDSS sea areas
• Sea area A1. An area within the radiotelephone coverage of at least
one VHF coast station in which continuous DSC alerting is available
as defined by the International Maritime Organization.
• Sea Area A2. An area, excluding sea area A1, within the
radiotelephone coverage of at least one MF coast station in which
continuous DSC alerting is available as defined by the International
Maritime Organization.
• Sea Area A3. An area, excluding sea areas A1 and A2, within the
coverage of an INMARSAT geostationary satellite in which
continuous alerting is available.
• Sea Area A4. An area outside sea areas A1, A2, and A3.
