CONTRACTION
The contraction of skeletal muscle tissue
occurs as actin and myosin myofilaments
slide past one another, causing the
sarcomeres to shorten. Shortening of the
sarcomeres causes muscles to shorten.
The sliding of the actin myofilaments past
myosin myofilaments during contraction
is called the sliding filaments
mechanism of muscle contraction.
MYOFIBRILS
Is a threadlike structure
that extends from one
end of the muscle fiber
to the other.
ACTIN MYOFILAMENTS
&
MYOSIN
MYOFILAMENTS
So the Actin and Myosin
myofilaments are arranged into
highly ordered repeating units along
the myofibril called the sarcomeres.
SARCOMERES
Is the basic structural and functional unit of skeletal
muscle, because it is the smallest portion of skeletal
muscle capable of contracting. Each Sarcomeres extends
from one Z disk to another Z disk. Each Z disk is a
network of protein fibers forming an attachment site for
actin myofilaments.
3 MAJOR PARTS OF MUSCLE
• Relaxed muscle
• Contracting muscle
• Fully Contracted muscle

FUNCTION OF ADP & ATP
ADP-

Adenosine Diphosphate
ATP-

Adenosine Triphosphate
Once they are attached, the myosin
filaments change their angle, pulling
back the actin filaments in a power
stroke, releasing the ADP molecule in
the process. This causes
the sarcomere to shorten. Now, an
ATP molecule binds to the myosin
head, causing it to detach from the
actin filament.
