Target Objectives:
1. Understand what authentic
assessment is.

2. Compare and contrast the benefits

of authentic assessment to that of
traditional assessment.

3. Understand how authentic

assessment best serves the needs
of student assessment and why it
should be used in the classroom.

AUTHENTIC ASSESSMENT
• The word "authentic" is understood to mean
something that is true, real, or actual.
• A form of assessment in which students are
asked to perform real-world or realistic
tasks that demonstrate meaningful
application of essential knowledge and skills
• demonstrate specific skills and
competencies, that is, to apply the skills

SEVERAL DEFINITIONS FOR AUTHETIC ASSESSMENT:

• "Authentic assessment refers to assessment tasks that resemble reading and
writing in the real world and in school (Hiebert, Valencia & Afflerbach, 1994)"
• "Students must use knowledge to fashion performances effectively and
creatively. The tasks are either replicas of or analogous to the kinds of
problems faced by adult citizens and consumers or professionals in the field."
(Wiggins, 1993, p. 229).
• "Assessment is authentic when we directly examine student performance on
worthy intellectual tasks" (Wiggins, 1990).

What are the differences
between traditional
assessment and authentic
assessment?

EDM314 Extension Activity July 24 & 31,2021 EdD MinSU

CHARACTERISTICS OF

TRADITIONAL
ASSESSMENT
• Responses are selected (choices provided)
• Students recognize or recall prior information
• Usually only one right answer to a problem
• Act as drills - students repeat answers to
questions for memorization
• Answers to questions provided without always
providing the reason behind their answer
• Knowledge is only proved through pen and
paper tests and assignments.

EDM314 Extension Activity July 24 & 31,2021 EdD MinSU

GENERAL EXAMPLES OF
TRADITIONAL ASSESSMENT
• End of year Standardized Tests
• Multiple Choice Questions
• True or False Questions
• Fill in the Blank Questions
• Matching type Questions
• Most Short Response Questions
CHARACTERISTICS OF

AUTHENTIC

ASSESSMENT
Performance-based - students perform a task to display
knowledge
• Knowledge is acquired and then demonstrated through
performance (real-world opportunities)
• Multiple solutions to problems - not only about
knowing the right answer, but how you got to the right
answer
• Allows for teachers to understand a student's thought
process
• Student-centered - students are able to display their
personal strengths
GENERAL EXAMPLES OF
AUTHENTIC ASSESSMENTS
• Long term research projects
• Project based learning
• Tasks requiring the application of
knowledge to solve a problem

ASSESSMENT
APPROACH “ One shot approach” Iterative in nature. Knowledge and skills are used in
more than one way.
METHOD • Encourages • Encourage divergent thinking In authentic assessment it's not just a

• Promotes ‘WHAT’ • Promotes ‘HOW’ knowledge they have to apply, they have to
knowledge construct,

FOCUS Teacher-structured Student-structured it's mainly student structured

because it's the student who applies
the skills that he have learned from
the lesson in an activity or in the
simulated course or real –life
situation.

SETTING Contrived/Imagined Simulation/Real-Life there is a real life or a simulated

activity where they apply the skills
that they have learned from their
lesson.

OPTIONS Selecting a response Performing a task There's an actual application of what

was learned from the lesson.
ACTION Emphasizes competition Emphasizes cooperation

How does authentic
assessment best meet the
needs of students?
• It is not enough to just ask students to recite or recall
the information they have been provided, but they
should be able to perform a task to display their
knowledge.
• Schools are an apprenticeship for the lives of students.
• Providing them with the opportunity to directly relate
what they are learning to their lives will improve
interest as well as retention.

IS AUTHENTIC ASSESSMENT
APPROPRIATE FOR ALL STUDENTS?
• Yes, with the awareness of linguistic and cultural
differences, authentic assessment allows the instructor
to provide multiple ways for students to demonstrate
what they have learned.
• Teachers can differentiate instruction as well as
assessment.
• The assessment is supposed to accommodate the
student and the learning.
• Relying on one form of assessment can lead to a very
limited, and perhaps a not very valid understanding of
students.

EDM314 Extension Activity July 24 & 31,2021 EdD MinSU

WHAT IS THE KEY TO
AUTHENTIC ASSESSMENT?
• The key is the educator’s ability to
provide an authentic simulation of the
setting in which the learning will be
required. In other words, create a real
life situation for the students.

• The challenge for us as a teacher is to

commit to change the way we teach and
assess students as well as put forth the
effort to develop and use authentic
assessment strategies.

EDM314 Extension Activity July 24 & 31,2021 EdD MinSU

What are some
examples of authentic
assessment?

EDM314 Extension Activity July 24 & 31,2021 EdD MinSU

• Authentic assessment can be either a short-
term or long-term assignment for students.

• However, "within a complete assessment

system, there should be a balance of longer
performance assessments and shorter ones"
(Valencia, 1997)

• According to Lawrence Rudner, authentic

assessment should require that students be
active participants in learning and be able to
demonstrate knowledge and skills.
Authentic Assessment examples:
• Conduction research and writing a report
• Character analysis
• Student debates (individual or group)
• Drawing and writing about a story or chapter
• Experiments - trial and error learning
• Journal entries (reflective writing)
• Discussion partners or groups
• Student self-assessment
• Peer assessment and evaluation
• Presentations
• Projects
• Portfolios
• Tiered learning classrooms

DRAWBACKS OF
AUTHENTIC ASSESSMENT

 Require more time for

both students and
instructors
 Grading an authentic
assessment is largely
subjective

 Require detailed,
personalized, and
specific feedback
EDM314 Extension Activity July 24 & 31,2021 EdD MinSU
CONCLUSION
 Authentic assessment has the
outstanding ability to make a
long-lasting impact on not only
your course, but also the students
enrolled in it. By providing
students with an opportunity to
test their skills in new and
relevant situations, you’ll prepare
them for how they’ll be assessed
in their professional lives and
show them the relevance of your
course’s content outside the
classroom.
