Active & Passive Voice

When to use what & why ?

The active voice is used when:

• The sentences need to be kept short and
simple/Kalimat harus dibuat pendek dan sederhana.

• The focus is on the subject/Fokusnya ada pada subjek.

 The passive voice is used when :

• The subject is unknown or irrelevant/

Subjek tidak diketahui atau tidak relevan

• The subject is obvious/Topiknya jelas.

• The focus is on the verb or object rather than the subject/Fokusnya ada pada
kata kerja atau objek daripada subjeknya.
 The passive voice should be generally avoided :

• When writing news articles and stories/

Saat menulis artikel berita dan cerita.

• When the subject of the sentence is more important than the object /Ketika subjek kalimat lebih
penting daripada objek .

• When there needs to be a direct relationship between the subject and the verb/ Ketika perlu ada
hubungan langsung antara subjek dan kata kerja.
