TOUCHING THE GARMENT
Jesus healing

“Now a woman, having a flow of blood for twelve years, who had spent all her
livelihood on physicians and could not be healed by any, came from behind and
touched the border of His garment. And immediately her flow of blood
stopped. And Jesus said, "Who touched Me?" When all denied it, Peter and
those with him said, "Master, the multitudes throng and press You, and You
say,`Who touched Me?'" But Jesus said, "Somebody touched Me, for I
perceived power going out from Me." Now when the woman saw that she was
not hidden, she came trembling; and falling down before Him, she declared to
Him in the presence of all the people the reason she had touched Him and
how she was healed immediately. And He said to her, "Daughter, be of good
cheer; your faith has made you well. Go in peace."” (Luke, 8: 43-48)
TOUCHING THE GARMENTBy using the question “who touched my
garment?” Jesus made the woman understand
Jesus healing that her healing was not produced by any
magical act, but by faith in the One who was
wearing the garment, Jesus.
“The wondering crowd that pressed close about
Christ realized no accession of vital power. But
when the suffering woman put forth her hand to
touch Him, believing that she would be made
whole, she felt the healing virtue. So in spiritual
things. To talk of religion in a casual way, to pray
without soul hunger and living faith, avails
nothing… The only faith that will benefit us is
that which embraces Him as a personal Saviour;
which appropriates His merits to ourselves. Many
hold faith as an opinion. Saving faith is a
transaction by which those who receive Christ
join themselves in covenant relation with God.
Genuine faith is life. A living faith means an
increase of vigor, a confiding trust, by which the
soul becomes a conquering power”

LAYING ASIDE THE GARMENT
Jesus serving
“[Jesus] rose from supper and laid aside His garments, took a
towel and girded Himself. After that, he poured water into a
basin and began to wash his disciples' feet, drying them with
the towel that was wrapped round him.” (John, 13: 4-5)

RENDING THE CLOTHES
Jesus is rejected

“But Jesus kept silent. And the high priest answered and said to Him, "I
put You under oath by the living God: Tell us if You are the Christ, the Son
of God!" Jesus said to him, "It is as you said. Nevertheless, I say to you,
hereafter you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the
Power, and coming on the clouds of heaven." Then the high priest tore his
clothes, saying, "He has spoken blasphemy! What further need do we have
of witnesses? Look, now you have heard His blasphemy!” (Matthew, 26: 63-65)
RENDING THE CLOTHES
Jesus is rejected
When Caiaphas tore his clothes, he was rejecting Jesus as the Son of God and he was
condemning himself, since the High Priest wasn’t allowed to rend his clothes by law
(Leviticus, 21: 10)
Caiaphas’ act was a symbol of the end of the Leviticus priestly system. Jesus has been the
High Priest and has ministered in the Celestial Sanctuary since then.
PUTTING THE MOCKERY GARMENT ON
Jesus is humiliated

“Then the soldiers of the governor took Jesus into the Praetorium and
gathered the whole garrison around Him. And they stripped Him and put a
scarlet robe on Him. When they had twisted a crown of thorns, they put it on
His head, and a reed in His right hand. And they bowed the knee before Him
and mocked Him, saying, "Hail, King of the Jews!"” (Matthew, 27: 27-29)
PUTTING THE MOCKERY GARMENT ON
Jesus is humiliated

The roman soldiers mocked Jesus as “the king of Jews”

by putting an old scarlet robe and a crown of thorns on
him, and giving him a reed as a scepter.
The One who came to clothe men with His cloak of
righteousness was getting a robe of mockery from
men.

Jesus bore all that humiliation because of his

love for us, and He even accepted to be led to
death.
Are we willing to bear humiliation and gibe
for our love of Jesus?
PARTING THE GARMENTS
Jesus is crucified

“Then the soldiers, when they had

crucified Jesus, took His garments and
made four parts, to each soldier a part,
and also the tunic. Now the tunic was
without seam, woven from the top in one
piece. They said therefore among
themselves, "Let us not tear it, but cast
lots for it, whose it shall be," that the
Scripture might be fulfilled which says:
"They divided My garments among them,
And for My clothing they cast lots."
Therefore the soldiers did these things.”
(John, 19: 23-24)
PARTING THE GARMENTS
Jesus is crucified

Jesus saw how the roman soldiers parted His garments in that moment of death agony;
they were fulfilling the prophecy of David by parting his garments and casting lots
(Psalms, 22: 18)
When Jesus saw the fulfillment of that prophecy, He recovered His strength and bore all
the suffering on the cross.
He wasn’t suffering in vain. Like that prophecy, the other prophecies about His sacrifice
were going to be fulfilled; His sacrifice was going to save millions of people in this world
of sin.
