The Six-Step Case Analysis

Process
1. Consider the Relevant Information

• Get familiar with basic details of the case

• Recognise the degree of certainty (facts), and uncertainty
(assumptions, inferences)
• Identify the people, activities, organisation and contexts of the
situation

2
2. Problem Statement
• Define the case problem and write the problem statement
• Problems are barriers that threaten to block an organisation, group or
a person from achieving important goals
• A good problem statement should zero in on the key issue to be
addressed
• Do not suggest a solution in your problem statement

3
3. Analyse the Facts and Underlying
Assumptions
• Consider the assumptions underlying the facts
-Are the assumptions realistic and reasonable?
-Can you support the assumptions with information found in the
case?

• You will end up with

- constraints faced by the protagonist
- key criteria needed to solve the case

• You can also do a SWOT analysis of the case

4
4. List Possible Alternative Solutions

• Identify solutions
• Consider the criteria that must be met in order to accomplish each
solution
• List advantages and disadvantages of each solution
• Do not predetermine the best solution at this point

5
5. Select a Solution and Prepare to Defend it

• Show how the solution will correct the problem

• Use logic and reasoning from the case analysis to defend your
solution
• List the pros and cons of your solution
• Consider the probability of success, and the risks

6
6. Decide How to Carry Out the Solution

• Develop an action plan for carrying out the solution

• Spell out the specific steps required
• Specify the contingency plan if the plan fails
