Dimensioning

Types of Dimensioning
• Every drawing besides showing the true shape of an object, must supply
its exact length, breadth, height, sizes, etc.

• Supplying this information on a drawing is called dimensioning.

• Two types of dimensioning are widely used:

i. Size Dimensioning
ii. Location Dimensioning
SIZE & LOCATION DIMENSIONING
•.
Methods to place Dimensions

• Here the dimension is placed perpendicular to dimension line in such a

way that it may be read from bottom edge or the right/left hand edge
of the drawing sheet.

• The dimensions should be placed near the middle & above, clear
on dimension lines.
Aligned Dimensioning
• Here the dimension is placed perpendicular to dimension line in such a
way that it may be read from bottom edge or the right/left hand edge
of the drawing sheet.

• The dimensions should be placed near the middle & above, clear
on dimension lines.
Unidirectional Dimensioning
• Here all the dimensions are so placed that they can be read
from
bottom edge of the drawing sheet.

• Thedimension lines are broken near the middle for inserting

the dimensions.
• This system is mainly used on large drawings e.g. as of
aircrafts, automobiles etc.

Dimensioning Guidelines
Dimensioning Guidelines
• Dimension lines should be drawn at least 8 mm away from the outlines of the
view & from each other.

• To place dimensions either Chain dimensioning (continuity in horizontal direction)

or Parallel dimensioning (continuity in ascending order in vertical direction)
can be used.

• Smaller dimensions should be placed nearer the view & the larger farther
away in the view.
Dimensions should NOT be duplicated.
All dimensions are to be spread among the shown views.
(The same information shouldn’t be shown at two views.)
No unnecessary dimensions should be used and no dimension to be
created and shown by mathematical calculations.
Dimensions should be attached to the view that best shows the
contour of the feature to be dimensioned (EXERCISE 3) CORRECT IT.
Whenever possible, avoid dimensioning to hidden lines and features.
Avoid dimensioning over or through the object.
A dimension should be attached to only one view;
For example, extension lines should not connect two views.

Incorrect
Avoid crossing extension lines, but do not break them when they do cross.

Multiple extension line

crossings may be confused
for the outside corner of the
part.
Whenever possible, avoid sending extension lines through object views.
In general, a circle is dimensioned by its diameter and an arc by its radius.
Holes should be located and sized in the view that shows
the feature as a circle.
Do not cross a dimension line with an extension line,
and avoid crossing dimensions with leader lines.
Dimension numbers should be centered between arrowheads.
