ROLE OF INDIVIDUAL IN

PREVENTION OF
POLLUTION
WHAT IS POLLUTION ?
Pollution, also called environmental pollution is the addition of any substance (solid,
liquid, or gas) or any form of energy to the environment at a rate faster than it can be
dispersed, diluted, decomposed, recycled, or stored in some harmless form. The major
kinds of pollution, usually classified by environment, are air pollution, water pollution, and
land pollution. Modern society is also concerned about specific types of pollutants, such as
noise pollution, light pollution, and plastic pollution. Pollution of all kinds can have
negative effects on the environment and wildlife and often impacts human health and well-
being.
ROLE OF AN INDIVIDUAL IN
PREVENTION OF POLLUTION
● It Lay greater emphasis on pollution prevention than pollution control.
● Use ecofriendly products. For Example: Use CFC free refrigerators,
use the chemical derived from peaches and plums to clean computer
chips and circuit board instead of CFCs.
● Reduce the dependency on fossil fuel especially coal or oil by
promoting the use of non-conventional source of energy such as Solar
energy, Biomass energy etc.
● Promote Reuse and Recycling wherever possible and reduce the
production of waste
● Save electricity by not wasting it. Shut off the lights and fans when not
needed.
● Try to lobby and push for setting up garbage separation and recycling
programs in your localities
● Reduce the use of wood and paper products wherever possible. Try to
recycle paper products and use recycled paper wherever possible.
● Do not litter the roads and surroundings just because the sweeper from
the Municipal Corporation will clean it up. Take care to put trash into
dustbins or bring it back home with you where it can be appropriately
disposed.
● Try to avoid asking for plastic carry bags when you buy groceries or
vegetables or any other items. Use your own cloth bag instead.
● Advocate organic farming by asking your grocery store to stock
vegetables and fruits grown by an organic method. This will
automatically help to reduce the use of pesticides.
● Set up a compost bin in your garden or terrace and use it to produce
manure for your plants to reduce use of fertilizers.
DISASTER
TYPES OF DISASTERS

 Natural Disasters

 Man Made Disasters

NATURAL DISASTERS
A natural disaster is characterized by the abnormal intensity of a natural agent (flood,
mudslide, earthquake, avalanche, drought) when the usual measures to be taken to
prevent this damage were not able to prevent their emergence or
were not able to be taken. There are various types of
natural disaster :
o Hurricanes and tropical storms.
o Landslides & debris flow.
o Thunderstorms and lighting.
o Tornadoes.
o Tsunamis.
o Wildfire.
MAN MADE DISASTERS
Man-made disasters have an element of human intent, negligence, or error involving a
failure of a man-made system, as opposed to natural disasters resulting from natural
hazards. Such man-made disasters are crime, arson, civil disorder, terrorism, war,
biological/chemical threat, cyber-attacks, etc. Some examples of
man made disaster :
• Bhopal Gas Tragedy, India
• Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill, Gulf of Mexico
• Chernobyl Meltdown, Ukraine
• Global Warming
WASTE MANAGEMENT
Waste management is the collection, transport,
processing or disposal of waste materials, usually
ones produced by human activity, in an effort to
reduce their effect on human health or local aesthetics
or amenity
5 R’s OF WASTE MANAGEMENT
SOLUTIONS OF WASTE
MANAGEMENT
Landfill – It involves having the waste buried off in empty, deserted locations outside the city.
Dumped waste is made to undergo compression to enhance the density and make the fill
stable. It is later covered to discourage vermin growth. A gas extraction system is commonly
installed to extract the gas (arising out of decomposition) through a burrow pit.

Biological reprocessing – Wastes of organic origin are made to undergo biological

decomposition and re-used as compost or mulch for agriculture and landscaping. Gas
collected is used for electricity generation
