THE INTERNATIONAL FUND FOR AGRICULTURAL
DEVELOPMENT (IFAD)
-A SPECIALIZED AGENCY OF THE UNITED NATIONS MANDATED TO
ENABLE POOR RURAL WOMEN AND MEN TO IMPROVE THEIR FOOD
SECURITY AND NUTRITION, RAISE THEIR INCOMES AND STRENGTHEN
THEIR RESILIENCE. AND IFAD IS A UNITED NATIONS AGENCY
DEDICATED TO HELPING ADVANCE AND INVEST IN THE LIVES OF
RURAL PEOPLE AROUND THE WORLD THROUGH LOW-INTEREST
LOANS AND GRANTS. IFAD SEEKS TO EMPOWER RURAL PEOPLE TO
INCREASE THEIR FOOD SECURITY, IMPROVE THE NUTRITION OF
THEIR FAMILIES AND INCREASE THEIR INCOMES THROUGH FUNDING
OF GRANTS AND LOW-INTEREST LOANS TO SEVERAL PROJECTS.
IFAD WORKS IN AREAS WHERE POVERTY AND HUNGER ARE MOST
PROMINENT.

ROLE
 to enable poor rural people to improve their incomes and food security and provide better
food, education and health care for their families

 It concentrates especially on women and indigenous peoples living in highly fragile and
vulnerable ecosystems, coastal fishers and other poor smallholders and landless people.

 to improve access to markets, technology and rural financial services

 to improve management of natural resources and the environment and provide


sustainable access to land and water resources

 incorporate improved techniques for managing soil and water


ROLE
 securing access to land in ancestral domains for indigenous peoples and documenting
customary laws and traditional practices
 provide support for fishing communities in coastal resource management and
environmental protection practices
 empowers rural people to build their climate resilience
 Increasing poor rural people’s productive capacities in a sustainable and resilient
manner;
 increasing and improving their engagement in markets, while enabling them to better
manage related risks;
 strengthening the environmental sustainability and climate resilience of their economic
activities.
HISTORY
 One of the major outcomes of the 1974 World Food Conference.

 It is established as an international financial institution in 1997.

 IFAD was one of the major initiatives of the world food conference, held in Rome in 1974.

 Since then, IFAD- supported projects have reached millions of people.

 In 2017, the president of IFAD Gilbert F. Houngbo from Togo was elected for a four-year term.

 IFAD had a total of 164 member nations in 2006, compared with 91 at the time of its
establishment

 Over the last decades of the 20th century, IFAD funded more than 500 projects in more than
100 countries.
