Transformer protection against grid faults

Fault current distribution for grid side fault.

2
Effect of grid side fault on transformer protection

 For grid side fault some of the current is flowing through power transformer HV side , when this
value greater than pick up value relay will give trip, and this will result into nuisance tripping
 This fault current impacts the OC and EF settings as well as stand by earth fault settings

 By enabling directionality feature in OC and EF protection we can overcome effect of grid fault on
OC and EF settings, and we can avoid nuisance tripping.
 REF and differential protection are not affected by grid faults

Transformer HV and LV backup protection
Stand by earth fault protection

 We can increase the time delay of stand by earth fault to 0.9 seconds so that
by that time external protection system will isolate grid fault.
 if it persists more than 0.9 seconds then transformer protection is
important so stand by earth fault protection will operates
