Types of Bank
Banks are financial institutions which perform deposit and lending functions. There are various types of
banks in India and each is responsible to perform different functions.
In terms of government exam syllabus, it is important that a candidate has knowledge about the types of
Banks and role of each of them in managing the financial system of a country.
The bank takes deposit at a much lower rate from the public called deposit rate and lends money at a much
higher rate called lending rate.
बैंक वित्तीय संस्थान हैं जो धन जमा करने और धन उधार देने का कार्य करते हैं। भारत में विभिन्न प्रकार के बैंक हैं तथा प्रत्येक बैंक अलग-अलग कार्य करने के लिए उत्तरदायी
है।
सरकारी परीक्षा के पाठ्यक्रम के संदर्भ में, यह महत्वपूर्ण है कि किसी उम्मीदवार को किसी देश की वित्तीय प्रणाली के प्रबंधन में बैंकों के प्रकार और उनमें से प्रत्येक की भूमिका
के बारे में जानकारी हो।
बैंक जनता से कम दर पर जमा राशि लेता है जिसे जमा दर कहा जाता है और उच्च दर पर राशि उधार देता है जिसे उधार दर कहा जाता है।
Banks can be classified into various types. Given below is the bank types in India:-
• Central Bank
• Cooperative Banks
• Commercial Banks
• Regional Rural Banks (RRB)
• Local Area Banks (LAB)
• Specialised Banks
• Small Finance Banks
• Payments Banks
बैंकों को विभिन्न प्रकारों में वर्गीकृ त किया जा सकता है। नीचे भारत के बैंक के प्रकार दिए गए हैं:-
• सेंट्रल बैंक/के न्द्रीय बैंक
• को-ऑपरेटिव बैंक/सहकारी बैंक
• कमर्शियल बैंक/वाणिज्यिक बैंक
• रीजनल रूलर बैंक/क्षेत्रीय ग्रामीण बैंक
• लोकल एरिया बैंक/स्थानीय क्षेत्र के बैंक
• स्पेसिलाइस्ड बैंक/विशेषीकृ त बैंक
• स्माल फाइनेंस बैंक/लघु वित्त बैंक
• पेमेंट्स बैंक
The types of banks in India, their functions and the list of banks under each section forms a very
important part of the banking awareness syllabus which is included in most Government exams.
Functions of Banks
The major functions of banks are almost the same but the set of people each sector or type
deals with may differ. Given below the functions of the banks in India:
भारत में बैंकों के प्रकार, उनके कार्य और प्रत्येक अनुभाग के तहत बैंकों की सूची, बैंकिं ग पाठ्यक्रम का महत्वपूर्ण भाग है, जो अधिकांश सरकारी परीक्षाओं में
सम्मलित है।
बैंकों के कार्य
बैंकों के प्रमुख कार्य लगभग समान होते हैं लेकिन प्रत्येक क्षेत्र या प्रकार के लोगों के साथ भिन्नता हो सकती है। भारत में बैंकों के कार्य हैं:
• Acceptance of deposits from the public
• Provide demand withdrawal facility
• Lending facility
• Transfer of funds
• Issue of drafts
• Provide customers with locker facilities
• Dealing with foreign exchange
• Apart from the above mentioned list, various utility functions also need to be performed by the
various banks.
The Reserve Bank of India is the central bank of our country. Each country has a central bank
which regulates all the other banks in that particular country.
The main function of the central bank is to act as the Government’s Bank and guide and regulate
the other banking institutions in the country. Given below are the functions of the central bank
of a country:
भारतीय रिजर्व बैंक हमारे देश का कें द्रीय बैंक है। प्रत्येक देश का एक कें द्रीय बैंक होता है, जो उस विशेष देश के अन्य सभी बैंकों को नियंत्रित करता है।
कें द्रीय बैंक का मुख्य कार्य सरकार के बैंक के रूप में कार्य करना और देश के अन्य बैंकिं ग संस्थानों का मार्गदर्शन और नियमन करना है। देश के कें द्रीय बैंक
के कार्य हैं:
• Providing guidance to other banks
• Issuing currency
• Implementing the monetary policies
• Supervisor of financial system
• In other words, the central bank of the country may also be known as the banker’s bank as it
provides assistance to the other banks of the country and manages the financial system of the
country, under the supervision of the Government.
These banks are organised under the state government’s act. They give short term loans to the
agriculture sector and other allied activities.
The main goal of Cooperative Banks is to promote social welfare by providing concessional
loans
ये बैंक राज्य सरकार के अधिनियम के तहत व्यवस्थित हैं। ये कृ षि क्षेत्र और अन्य संबद्ध गतिविधियों को अल्पकालिक ऋण देते हैं।
सहकारी बैंकों का मुख्य लक्ष्य रियायती ऋण प्रदान करके सामाजिक कल्याण को बढ़ावा देना है
They are organised in the 3 tier structure
• Tier 1 (State Level) – State Cooperative Banks (regulated by RBI, State Govt, NABARD)
• Funded by RBI, government, NABARD. Money is then distributed to the public
• Owned by the state government and top management is elected by members
• Tier 2 (District Level) – Central/District Cooperative Banks
• Tier 3 (Village Level) – Primary Agriculture Cooperative Banks
• टियर 1 (राज्य स्तर) - राज्य सहकारी बैंक (आरबीआई, राज्य सरकार, नाबार्ड द्वारा विनियमित)
• आरबीआई, सरकार, नाबार्ड द्वारा वित्त पोषित किए जाते हैं। फिर धन जनता में वितरित किया जाता है
• राज्य सरकार द्वारा स्वामित्व और शीर्ष प्रबंधन सदस्यों द्वारा चुना जाता है
• टीयर 2 (जिला स्तर) - कें द्रीय/जिला सहकारी बैंक
• टियर 3 (ग्राम स्तर) - प्राथमिक कृ षि सहकारी बैंक
Commercial Banks
• Private sector Banks – A bank where the majority stakes are owned by a private organisation or an
individual or a group of people
• Foreign Banks – The banks with their headquarters in foreign countries and branches in our country, fall
under this type of bank
• निजी क्षेत्र के बैंक - एक ऐसा बैंक जहां अधिकांश स्टेक का स्वामित्व एक निजी संगठन या एक व्यक्ति या लोगों के समूह के पास होता है
• विदेशी बैंक - विदेशों में अपने मुख्यालय और हमारे देश में शाखाओं वाले बैंक, इस प्रकार के बैंक के अंतर्गत आते हैं
Regional Rural Banks (RRB)
• These are special type of commercial Banks that provide concessional credit to agriculture and
rural sector.
• RRBs are established in 1975 and are registered under a Regional Rural Bank Act, 1976.
• RRBs are joint venture between Central government (50%), State government (15%) and a
Commercial Bank (35%).
• 196 RRBs have been established from 1987 to 2005.
• From 2005 onwards government started merger of RRBs.
• One RRB cannot open its branches in more than 3 geographically connected districts.
• ये एक विशेष प्रकार के वाणिज्यिक बैंक हैं, जो कृ षि और ग्रामीण क्षेत्र को रियायती ऋण प्रदान करते हैं।
• आरआरबी 1975 में स्थापित किए गए हैं और एक क्षेत्रीय ग्रामीण बैंक अधिनियम, 1976 के तहत पंजीकृ त हैं।
• RRBs कें द्र सरकार (50%), राज्य सरकार (15%) और एक वाणिज्यिक बैंक (35%) के बीच एक संयुक्त उद्यम है।
• 196 आरआरबी 1987 से 2005 तक स्थापित किए गए हैं।
• सरकार ने 2005 से आरआरबी का विलय शुरू कर दिया
• एक आरआरबी भौगोलिक रूप से जुड़े 3 से अधिक जिलों में अपनी शाखाएं नहीं खोल सकता है।
Local Area Banks (LAB)
Small Industries Development Bank of India (SIDBI) – Loan for a small scale industry or
business can be taken from SIDBI. Financing small industries with modern technology and
equipments is done with the help of this bank
भारतीय लघु उद्योग विकास बैंक (सिडबी) –लघु उद्योग या व्यवसाय के लिए सिडबी से ऋण लिया जा सकता है। आधुनिक उद्योगों और उपकरणों के साथ लघु
उद्योगों का वित्तपोषण इस बैंक की सहायता से किया जाता है
EXIM Bank – EXIM Bank stands for Export and Import Bank. To get loans or other financial
assistance with exporting or importing goods by foreign countries can be done through this type
of bank.
National Bank for Agricultural & Rural Development (NABARD) – To get any kind of financial
assistance for rural, handicraft, village and agricultural development, people can turn to NABARD.
There are various other specialised banks and each possess a different role in help develop the
country financially.
एक्सिम बैंक – एक्सिम बैंक का अर्थ निर्यात और आयात बैंक है। विदेशों से माल का निर्यात या आयात करने के साथ ऋण या अन्य वित्तीय सहायता प्राप्त करने
के लिए इस प्रकार के बैंक के माध्यम से किया जा सकता है
नेशनल बैंक फॉर एग्रीकल्चर एंड रूरल डेवलपमेंट (नाबार्ड) - ग्रामीण, हस्तकला, गाँव और कृ षि विकास के लिए किसी भी प्रकार की वित्तीय सहायता प्राप्त करने
के लिए, लोग नाबार्ड से सहायता ले सकते हैं।
ऐसे विभिन्न अन्य विशेषीकृ त बैंक हैं और प्रत्येक देश को आर्थिक रूप से विकसित करने में सहायता के लिए एक अलग भूमिका निभाता है।
Small Finance Banks
As the name suggests, this type of banks look after the micro industries, small farmers and the
unorganised sector of the society by providing them loans and financial assistance. These banks
are governed by the central bank of the country.
जैसा कि नाम से पता चलता है, इस प्रकार के बैंक सूक्ष्म उद्योगों, छोटे किसानों और समाज के असंगठित क्षेत्र को ऋण और वित्तीय सहायता प्रदान करते हैं।
ये बैंक देश के कें द्रीय बैंक द्वारा शासित होते हैं।
Payments Banks
A newly introduced form of banking, the payments bank have been conceptualised by the
Reserve Bank of India. People with an account in the payments bank can only deposit an
amount of upto Rs.1,00,000/- and cannot apply for loans or credit cards under this account.
Options for online banking, mobile banking, issue of ATM and debit card can be done through
payments bank. Given below is a list of the few payments bank in our country:

भारतीय रिजर्व बैंक द्वारा बैंकिं ग के एक नए रूप में, पेमेंट्स बैंक की अवधारणा की गई है। पेमेंट्स बैंक में खाता रखने वाले लोग के वल 1,00,000/- रु.
तक की राशि जमा कर सकते हैं और इस खाते में ऋण या क्रे डिट कार्ड के लिए आवेदन नहीं कर सकते हैं।
पेमेंट्स बैंक के माध्यम से ऑनलाइन बैंकिं ग, मोबाइल बैंकिं ग, एटीएम और डेबिट कार्ड देने के विकल्प प्राप्त किए जा सकते हैं। हमारे देश में कु छ भुगतान बैंकों
की सूची इस प्रकार हैं:
• Airtel Payments Bank
• India Post Payments Bank
• Fino Payments Bank
• Jio Payments Bank
• Paytm Payments Bank
• NSDL Payments Bank
