Automatic transition
Water and bridges represent the flow of time, the movements of
arriving and departing, of coming into existence and passing out
of it.
A person who is absorbed in a garden, who has felt that only the garden,
so to speak, is his companion on a pleasant journey, suddenly realizes at
a certain point that he exists there as nothing more than one who is
looking at the garden from the outside.
The whole arrangement may perhaps seem to be an ironical design contrasting the warm,
serenity of the water with the cool, rather human capriciousness of gleaming red lines, but in fact
we find here neither an excessive irony nor an exaggerated sophistication.
Just as we experience great music, just as we experience life itself, we can experience a
great garden. Again, just as we can be deceived by life, so we can be deceived by a
great garden.
I listen to the voices, and when i out down what the
voices say, It's right. Something I don't like what they
say, but I don't change it.
When you begin a picture, you often make pretty discoveries. You must be on guard
against these. Destroy the thing: do it over several times. In each destroying of a
beautiful discovery, the artist does not really suppress it, but rather transform it,
condenses it, makes it more substantial. What comes out in the end is the result of
discarded finds. Otherwise you become your own connoisseur. I sell myself nothing.
