• The history of the Tamils present an exciting pageant of a
powerful civilization whose origin dates back to ancient
times.
• Tamils, who belong to the Dravidian race, were the first
major occupants of the country and settled in the
northwestern part of India long before the coming of the
Indo-Aryans. Excavations have revealed that the features
of the people of the Indus Valley Civilization bore a
strong resemblance to this race.

• Tamil Nadu is situated on the South-eastern side of the
Indian peninsula. It is bounded on the east by Bay of
Bengal, in the south by the Indian ocean,  in the west by
the states of Kerala  and Karnataka and in the North by
the Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh.

station  Kodaikanal is situated.
• The slopes of the western Ghats  are covered  with heavy 
ever green forests. The Nilgiris and the Anamalai  are the
hill groups with the maximum height.
• In the famous Ootacamund area of the Nilgiris district, is
the highest peak Doddabetta, 2640 metres above the sea
level.
• Ooty is known as 'Queen of hill  stations'.In Tamil Nadu
almost every district has a hill-station or a sea-side resort.

Natural Resources
•The long coastline of over 1000 Km. forms a major natural resource with immense
value for commercial, recreational and aesthetic purposes.

One of the most noteworthy flowers is Kurinji
of Kodaikkanal which blooms once in 12
years.

Cinchona from which quinine - a drug for
treating malaria is extracted & eucalyptus

Tamil Nadu is blessed with a number of rivers
of which Kaveri is the most important.

The fertile Coromandel plains are irrigated by
the Kaveri and its delta.

The other rivers in the state are the Palar,
Pennar, Vaigai and Tamiraparani.

Climate
• The climate is tropical with little variation in
temperatures during winter and summer.
• The maximum temperature in the plains is about
45C in the summer and the minimum goes to
about 10  C during the winter; the normal
rainfall in the state is about 50mm with an
average number of 50 rainy days.
• Tamil Nadu's Climate has another distinct
feature: Winter rainfall, between the time period
of October-December. Heavy rainfall
accompanied by thunder and lightning occurs
during this time. The best season to visit the state
is between October and March.

Roads
The length of roads network in Tamil Nadu is 61,641 km.
Railways
The total length of railways is 3,927 km and the main junctions stations are
Chennai, Madurai, Tiruchirapalli, Coimbatore, Tirunelveli, Salem, Erode and
Arakkonam.
Aviation
Chennai, being the international airport in the southern region, is the main
centre of airline routes. Besides, there are airports at Tiruchirapalli, Madurai,
Coimbatore and Salem.

Ports
Major ports in the State are Chennai, Egmore and Tuticorin. There
are seven other minor ports including Cuddalore and Nagapattinam.

• Tamilnadu’s legislature was bicameral till 1986 but later on it was
replaced by a unicameral legislature with 234 members in the
legislative assembly.
• Tamil Nadu has 39 seats in the Lok Sabha, the lower house of
Parliament.
• The major administrative units in the state include 30 districts, 7
municipal corporations, 152 municipalities, 561 town panchayats
and 12,618 village panchayats.
• With the advancement of computer and information technology,
the state has initiated e-Governance in the sectors like
legislature, judiciary, or administration for improving internal

• Tamil Nadu is the second biggest producer of rice and is the
home land of Dr. M.S. Swami Nathan, known as the "Father
of the Green Revolution" in India. The state is historically
known for it’s agriculture from ancient times.
• The major food crops grown in the state include Rice, Jwar,
Bajra, maize and pulses. Cotton, sugarcane, coconut, tea and
coffee are also grown and considered as cash crops.
• Paddy is grown in large excess because rice is the main staple
food of the state. There are three crops based on duration.

Cultural environment: Festivals
In Tamil Nadu Makar Sankranti becomes Pongal. It is a

celebration of the harvest, which is observed for three days


in January. Bhogi Pongal, Surya Pongal and Mattu Pongal,
are the three days of Pongal festivities on successive days.
In certain parts cattle races still enliven the village
festivities. Pongal is a colourful and traditional festival with
many a ceremony devoted to various deities.

This is celebrated in the month of April as Tamil New Year.


The festival starts in the month of April-May and ends on


the tenth day. It is celebrated with great enthusiasm at
Meenakshi temple, Madurai (500 kms from Chennai). The
festival witnesses the marriage of Meenakshi (Parvati) and
Sundareshwara (Lord Shiva) that attracts large crowds from
all over the state and also from the whole country.

• Tamil Nadu is one of the most industrialized states in the country; at
present it is the fifth largest economy in India.
• The State Domestic Product at current prices is about US$ 36.78
billion and current exports are around US$ 5.5 billion.

• The state is also known for its textile industries. A
large number of textile mills and engineering
industries are present around Coimbatore City. The
textile industry adds huge revenue to the country’s
economy by providing direct employment to an
estimated 35 million people, and thereby
contributing 4% of GDP and 35% of Gross Export
Earnings. Tirupur (Coimbatore district) is the largest
exporter of garments in the country and hence
called as the “Textile valley of India”.

• Tamil Nadu also leads the country in manufacturing as well as supplying
electrical and electronic goods and equipments. Companies like Nokia,
Flextronics, Motorola, Foxconn, Samsung, Cisco and Dell have their bases
in Chennai owing to its transport facilities and human resources. These
companies manufacture circuit boards and cellular phone handsets. One
of the global electrical equipment manufacturing public sector company
BHEL has manufacturing unit at Tiruchirapalli and Ranipet.
• Tamil Nadu has significant amount of mineral deposits such as Lignite
(87% contribution to the national share), Vermiculite (66%), Garnet
(42%), Zircon (38%), Graphite (33%), Ilmenite (28%), Rutile (27%),
Monazite (25%), Magnesite (17%). India's leading steel producer SAIL has
a steel plant in Salem, Tamil Nadu. Hence Tamil Nadu has several mineral
based industries in various parts of the state.

• Tamil Nadu is a leading contributor in the IT and BPO sector. Chennai
is the second leading software exporter in India, after Bangalore.
India's largest IT Park is housed at Chennai. Software exports from
Companies such as HCL, Wipro, TCS, Satyam, Infosys, Cognizant
Technology Solutions, Acme Technology Pvt Ltd, Covansys, Ford
Information Technology, Xansa, Verizon, iSoft, iNautix, Electronic Data
Systems, Bally and many others have offices in Chennai. Infosys
Technologies has set up India's largest software development centre
to house 25,000 software professionals at an estimated investment of
Rs.12, 500 million ($270 million) in Chennai. India's largest IT park is
housed at Chennai, jointly made by Ascendas India Ltd, a Singapore-
based company engaged in providing business space solutions, and
Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation (TIDCO).

• The state boasts many heavy engineering and vehicle manufacturing companies like Ford,
Caterpillar, Hyundai, BMW and Mitsubishi, MRF, TI cycles of India, Ashok Leyland, Royal
Enfield, Mahindra & Mahindra, TAFE Tractors and TVS etc. These heavy vehicle and
engineering industries are located in and around Chennai city.
• India's current share is about 1.6% of world production as the total number of passenger car
being manufactured in the world is 60 million against the installed capacity of 90 million.
Similarly, export constitutes approximately 0.3% of global trade
• Traditionally, Tamil Nadu is known automobile Manufacturing. Started in 1840, Simpsons
pioneered India's automobile industry rail coaches, motor cars, diesel engines and steam
passenger buses. In 1948, Ashok Leyland was started for assembly of Austin cars. The Integral
Coach Factory (ICF) was established in October 1955. In 1960s, TVS Group established a
number of auto components manufacturing plants.
• Chennai is popularly known as the "Detroit of Asia" in recognition of the large number of

• Chennai has emerged as India's largest automobile and auto components exporter in India. Hyundai
has made Chennai the manufacturing and export hub for its small cars. The 'i10 and i20' are being
manufactured only in Chennai and exported to the world. Chennai is Hyundai's largest base outside

• Studies by Hyundai, Nissan and Ford found Tamil Nadu the most cost-effective location for
manufacturing cars. Hyundai made Chennai as the "Global Export Hub for Small cars". . During

chemicals and other chemical products. This

• The Indian chemical industry is the 12th largest in
the world and 3rd largest in Asia, in terms of
volume. It accounts for about 13 per cent of total
exports and 8 per cent of the total imports of India.
During the last 5 years, exports of chemicals have
exceeded imports thereby resulting in a positive
balance of trade
• Chemical industry in Tamil Nadu: Tamil Nadu has 3 major Chemical clusters namely Manali in
Chennai, Cuddalore and Tuticorin. Tamil Nadu has manufacturing facilities for Fertilisers,
Paints, Carbon Black, Pesticides, Pharmaceuticals, Organic and Inorganic chemicals,
Polymers, Caustic soda, Soda ash, etc. Saint Gobain, France has established 2 Float Glass
plants in Sriperumpudur with an installed capacity of 4.0 lakh MT per annum, the largest
facility in India. Besides, Asahi Glass, Japan has established a facility for making automotive
glass. Harsha, UAE is currently in the process of establishing a Float Glass project with an
investment of Rs.1500 Crores in Chennai Neighbourhood. Chennai is set to emerge as the
largest Glass Hub in India.

• In the Indian biotech sector's overall turnover in 2008-09 was US$ 2.51 billion, as compared

311.28 million, bio-industrial segment US$ 99.19 million and bio-informatics grew 15 per cent
to touch US$ 45.65 million
• The variety of geographical terrains in the State provides tremendous biodiversity rarely seen

both large and diverse and represent great market opportunity for biotechnology products.
There are more than 5,000 species of flowering plants and the forest cover in the State
spreads over 22,500 sq.kms.
• The State also has one of the largest coastlines in the country which again presents

• Tamil Nadu would present an attractive market for Medical


Biotechnology products as it accounts for about 11% of the
pharmaceutical market in the country. Apart from penicillin
manufacturing and a reasonably large number of loan
licence formulation units, investment in this sector within
the State has been low. Hence Biotechnology presents an
ideal opportunity for the State to reverse this trend

Biotechnology, which can be commercially exploited to create new jobs
and economic wealth in the State. Many of the opportunities are based on

Government is now promoting the second TICEL BioPark.

• NASSCOM estimates the hardware spends to increase
from US$ 7.4 billion in 2005-06 to US$ 13.8 billion by

manufacturing and exporting hub in India. Some of the
Fortune 500 companies which have set up manufacturing
facilities in Chennai neighbourhood include: Nokia,
Motorola, DELL Computers, Samsung, Foxconn,
Sanmina-SCI, Flextronics, and Nokia-Siemens besides
more than 30 components suppliers.
• Nokia plant in Chennai is the World's largest mobile hand
sets manufacturing project. A study by Nokia found Total

Textiles
• Global trade in this industry is now at US$ 350 billion and
is expected to be in the range of US$ 600 billion by 2010

• Tamil Nadu has the largest cotton textile industry cluster
in India which contributes to 39 per cent of the total
production in the country. The country's largest textile
cluster, Tirupur, is also situated in Tamil Nadu. This
cluster accounts for 90 per cent of the country's cotton
knitwear exports. The exports of the Tirupur cluster for
the current fiscal year is US$ 1400 million.

• Chennai is another large cluster for woven garments.


Exporting over US 1.2 billion. The state is emerging as a

• Tamil Nadu has at present 28 oil and Gas fields in Cauvery
basin producing crude oil and natural gas. During 2007-08,
Crude oil production in Cauvery basin was 353,000 MT and
natural Gas: 1169 Million Cubic Metres. Further exploration is
underway.
• Tamil Nadu has 2 refineries belonging to CPCL, each one at
Chennai (9.5 million MT) and Panagudi (Narimanam) at
Nagapttinam (1.0 Million MT).

• Nagarjuna Oil Corporation is currently setting up an oil


refinery at Cuddalore with a capacity of 6.0 Million MT at an
investment of Rs.4790 Crores which is expected to commence
commercial production in 2011.
• This will augment the total refining capacity of Tamil Nadu to
16.50 Million MT.

employes many skilled workers.
