INTRODUCTION TO

MULTIMEDIA

DR. JOEL B. MANGABA

JULY 27, 2021
At the end of the session, the students are able to:

1. Define what multimedia is;

2. Identify the different types of multimedia;
3. Determine different software and platforms used in
multimedia; and
4. Understand Graphic and Digital Design.
Multimedia is a form of communication that combines
different content forms such as text, audio, images,
animations, or video into a single presentation, in
contrast to traditional mass media, such as printed
material or audio recordings.

Microsoft PowerPoint is a powerful slide show presentation
program. It is a standard component of the company's Microsoft
Office suite software, and is bundled together with Word, Excel,
and other office productivity tools. The program uses slides to
convey information rich in multimedia.

Canva is a graphic design platform, used to create social media

graphics, presentations, posters, documents and other visual
content. The app includes templates for users to use. The platform
is free to use and offers paid subscriptions like Canva Pro and
Canva for Enterprise for additional functionality.

Adobe Illustrator is more than just a graphic design tool that is
perfect for illustrative artwork, page layouts, corporate logos,
website mockups, and almost anything else as per the requirement.
Moreover, it’s an industry benchmark in vector creation tools.

Adobe Photoshop is synonymous with photo editing for

graphic designers. It is one of the most popular photo
editing software tools in the market in a robust package that
offers excellent graphic design capabilities.

CorelDraw Graphics Suite packs some pro-level features and
offers a highly accessible interface that is easy to use. It is a
bundle of multiple applications that deliver powerful editing
features.

GIMP is much more than just a photo editor that offers a lot
of incredible Photoshop features for free. It provides
multiple professional-quality functions to fine-tune snaps
and create artworks from scratch.

SOFTWARE / PLATFORM
FOR EDITING OF AUDIO
Audacity is our pick for best overall audio editing software
because it is a full-featured software with multi-track editing
features and cross-platform support for Windows, macOS, and
Linux. It’s great for a variety of audio editing projects,
including podcasts.

GarageBand is a free audio editing program for macOS laptop and desktop
computers. It is the best free audio editor because, among free editors, it is one
of the best-looking choices, comes with a solid list of effects and instruments
for creating new music, and integrates deeply with the Mac ecosystem, which
makes sense because it’s made by Apple. It may be preinstalled on your Mac
computer, or you can get it for free from the Apple App Store.

Adobe Audition is a professional-grade audio editing

software from a well-known name in media production.
Available on its own or as part of the Adobe Creative Cloud
suite, Audition is regularly used by professionals in the
radio, television, and movie industries. It is our pick as best
for live music because it does an excellent job recording
multiple channels simultaneously from multiple inputs with
excellent post-recording production tools.

Adobe Premiere Pro is one of two industry standard tools
when it comes to video editing. It's routinely used by top
professionals, on everything from YouTube videos,
commercials and short films to TV and movies.

Apple's Final Cut Pro X is a highly capable and highly

respected tool for professional video editing. The main thing
that counts against it is that it's not available for Windows. On
the upside, it's subscription-free. So if you don't want a
Creative Cloud subscription, Final Cut Pro X lets you pay
once, and once only.
SOFTWARE / PLATFORM
FOR EDITING OF VIDEO
Premiere Pro and Final Cut Pro are expensive, and a lot of work to
learn if you just want to edit some videos for fun, such as family
footage or your first YouTube video. In which case, we'd recommend
Adobe's Premiere Elements, which we'd call the best video editing
software for beginners.

CyberLink PowerDirector 365 is a serious bit of consumer-level video

editing software that long been available for Windows, and has recently
been released for Mac users too. It's available either as a one-off
purchase or a monthly or annual subscription, and both options are
pretty cheap.

Basic Design Principles - Balance

“Balance is the distribution of the visual weight of objects,

colors, texture, and space. If the design was a scale, these
elements should be balanced to make a design feel stable.
In symmetrical balance, the elements used on one side of
the design are similar to those on the other side; in
asymmetrical balance, the sides are different but still look
balanced. In radial balance, the elements are arranged
around a central point and may be similar.”
(J.Paul Getty Trust, 2011)

Basic Design Principles - Proximity

“The principle of proximity is simply the process of ensuring

related design elements are placed together. Any unrelated
items should be spaced apart. Proximity indicates that items
are connected or have a relationship to each other and
become one visual unit which helps to organize or give
structure to a layout.” (Matt Smith, 2017)
