Significant figures

 Every measurement results in a number that

includes reliable digits and uncertain digits.
 Reliable digits plus the first uncertain digit is called
significant digits.
 Eg- 1.62

Introduction Here, 1 and 6 are reliable and 2 is uncertain. Thus,

the measured value has 3 significant figures.
• Thus, the number of significant figures conveys
the information that except the last digit, all other
digits are known with certainty.
• The decimal place does not determine the no. of
significant figures.
1. All non- zero digits are significant.
2. Zeros between two non zero digits are significant.
3. The zeros preceding to the first non-zero number
Rules for are not significant.

are not significant.

5. Trailing zeros in a number with decimal place are

figures 6. Exact numbers,I.e., no.s without any uncertainty
have infinite no. of significant figures.
7. In case of exponential numbers only no.s are
counted and powers of 10 are irrelevant.
 All digits except zero(at end) are
considered to be significant.

All non- zero  Eg-
digits are i. 3.132 - 4 significant figures
significant. ii. 6.8132 - 5 significant figures
iii. 9.5 - 2 significant figures
