A Student’s Prayer

St. Thomas Aquinas

____________________________________
Creator of all things,
true source of light and wisdom
origin of all being ,
graciously let a ray of your light penetrate
the darkness of my understanding.

Take from me the double darkness

in which I have been born,
an obscurity of sin and ignorance.
Give me a keen understanding,
a retentive memory , and
the ability to grasp things
correctly and fundamentally.

Grant me the talent

of being exact in my explanations
and the ability to express myself
with thoroughness and charm
Point out the beginning,
direct the progress,
and help in the completion.
I ask this through Christ our Lord.
Amen.

Facing Sociocultural Differences among ASEAN
Nations
Each country has a unique national identity which
distinguishes it from other nations. This national
identity is collectively formed by its people who
share common interests and aspirations. National
identity defines how people think, act, and behave.
Thus, people from a particular nation are expected
to have a common set of beliefs, cultures,
traditions, and mindsets.
Conflicts due to sociocultural differences may arise
as the members of the ASEAN community
undergo the process of integration.
Misunderstandings may occur because some
people may lack tolerance, respect, and sensitivity
to other people’s cultures and traditions. It is
therefore necessary to develop the sociocultural
awareness and the multicultural literacy of ASEAN
learners.
Sociocultural awareness is defined as an individual’s
understanding of different societies and cultures and the
manner by which these influence people’s behavior.
Multicultural literacy, on the other hand, refers to a person’s
knowledge and appreciation of various cultures, beliefs,
and lifestyles. Learners who have sociocultural awareness
and multicultural literacy are able to understand and
analyze similarities and differences between cultures.
They are able to cooperate and communicate with people
coming from different societies.
You may develop your sociocultural awareness
and multicultural literacy by studying and learning
about every country in the ASEAN community. You
may exchange ideas with people from neighboring
countries through the internet. You may examine
the different viewpoints of people from other
nations regarding various local and global issues.
Through these, you will realize that amid diversity
and sociocultural differences, there can be unity
and solidarity among the people in ASEAN region.

ASEAN Showcases the Richness of Its
Street Food

JAKARTA, 12 June 2015 – It is undisputable that the

Southeast Asian kitchens produce endless galore of
sumptuous dishes. From therein, come signature
street foods like Glutinous rice rolls with shrimps,
Khmer Salad , Nasi Uduk, Satay, Kao Poun (Beef Rice
Noodle Soup), Chicken Noodle Soup, Chicken Adobo,
Chicken Rice, Pathai, Beef and Shrimp Green Curry,
Fresh spring rolls and various of desserts from each
country. Ubiquity and affordability, and most
importantly the delicate blend of unique spices used,
has elevated these dishes to world-wide fame.
The ASEAN Women’s Circle (AWC) held ASEAN Street Food Festival today at
the ASEAN Secretariat to showcase the richness of Southeast Asia’s street
food. The colorful spread of ASEAN cookery was prepared by spouses of the
ASEAN Permanent Missions to ASEAN and spouses of the ASEAN
Ambassadors to Indonesia as members of the AWC. Fund raised by the
Festival will be donated for needy people.

“The sumptuous food galore and their tempting fragrances indeed capture the
true picture of ASEAN: We are diverse, yet complementing and enriching each
other. Most importantly, street food is people’s food. This Festival therefore
truly brings into live ASEAN’s aspiration as a people-oriented, people-centred
Community,” said H.E. Dr. AKP Mochtan, Deputy Secretary-General of ASEAN
for Community & Corporate Affairs in his remarks.
True to the ASEAN’s spirit of cooperation, the AWC embraced
spouses of ASEAN Dialogue Partners and other Embassies in Jakarta
to add flavor and color to the Festival with samples of traditional
dishes from their respective countries. There was also a mini bazaar
where clothes, fashion accessories and pre-packed food from ASEAN
countries were sold.

Aside from promoting appreciation of the region’s richness in traditions

and culture, the Festival serves as an important platform for the
AWC’s outreach activity. The ASEAN Food Festival is one of the
AWC’s flagship programmes. Last year, a similar event was held
under the theme of “Traditional Culinary.”
This event received sponsors and supports from many parties, such as
Singapore Airlines, Cebu Pacific Air, Oishi, Indofood, Stretchline, and
also from ASEAN Countries and Dialogue Partners to ASEAN.

The AWC was founded in 1975 with the purpose of promoting friendship
and understanding among the members and with spouses of diplomatic
corps based in Jakarta. It also strives to further achieve the ASEAN
objectives to the public through its various activities. Mdm. Yasmin
Fachir, wife of H.E. Abdurrahman Mohammad Fachir, Vice Minister of
Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia, serves as Chief Patron of
the AWC, and Mdm. Ugi Pramono, spouse of the Indonesian Permanent
Representative to ASEAN, holds the AWC’s Presidency for 2015-2016.
