Acoustics is the interdisciplinary science that deals

with the study of all materials waves in gases,

ACOUSTICS liquid, and solids including vibrations, ultrasound

and infrasound. A person working in allied fields is
called an acoustician. Application of this field is
indispensable in modern society with the most
common being audio and noise control industries.
Acoustics impacts everything
from employee productivity in
office settings to performance
quality in auditoriums to the
market value of apartments,
condominiums and single-family
homes. While the science behind
sound is well understood, using
that science to create desired
acoustical performance within a
specific building or room is
complex. There’s no single
acoustical “solution” that can be
universally applied to building
design. Each built environment
ACOUSTICS IN offers its own unique set of
acoustical parameters.

ABSORBERS
SOUND ABSORBING ACOUSTIC PANELS AND
SOUNDPROOFING MATERIALS ARE USED TO
ELIMINATE ECHOES, REFLECTIONS, TO
IMPROVE SPEECH INTELLIGIBILITY,
REDUCE STANDING WAVES AND COMB
FILTERING.
VARIOUS SOUND ABSORBERS ARE OPEN
CELL POLYURETHANE FOAM, CELLULAR
MELAMINE, FIBERGLASS, FLUFFY FABRICS
AND OTHER POROUS MATERIALS. VARIOUS
THICKNESSES CAN BE USED TO ACHIEVE
SPECIFIC SOUND REQUIREMENTS.
SOUND
DIFFUSERS
THESE DEVICES REDUCE THE INTENSITY OF
SOUND BY SCATTERING IT OVER AND EXPANDED
AREA. TEMPORAL DIFFUSERS, SUCH AAS BINARY
ARRAYS, AND QUADRATICS, SCATTER SOUND IN
A MANNER SIMILAR TO DIFFRACTION OF LIGHT,
WHERE THE TIMING OF REFLECTIONS FROM AN
UNEVEN SURFACE OF VARYING DEPTHS CAUSES
INTERFERENCE WHICH SPREADS THE WORLD.

SOUND DIFFUSERS ARE MADE UP POLISHED

WOOD, PLYBOARDS AND PLASTICS.
NOICE BARRIERS
THESE MATERIALS RANGE FROM
EXTREMELY DENSE MATERIALS TO
REDUCE/BLOCK AIRBORNE
TRANSMISSIONS TO ACOUSTICALLY
ISOLATE SPACES.
THESE MATERIALS DAMPEN THE SOUND ON
A NEAR PERFECT LEVEL TO ACHIEVE
COMPLETE SOUND ISOLATION. STEEL,
CONCRETE, WOOD, PLASTICS, INSULATING
WOOL, OR COMPOSITES.
NOICE
REFLECTORS
NOICE REFLECTORS ARE HIGHLY POLISHED
MATERIALS THAT REFLECT MOST OF THE
INCIDENT SOUND WAVES. THE ANGLE OF
INCIDENCE IS EQUAL TO THE ANGLE OF
REFLECTION. THE REFLECTORS ARE
GENERALLY USED IN CEILINGS AND WALLS
OF INSTITUTIONS LIKE THEATRES AND
OPERA HALLS.
THE MATERIALS USED IN THESE ARE
HIGHLY POLISHED AND REFLECTIVE LIKE
METAL ALLOYS, TREATED WOOD, PLASTICS
AND POLISHED CERAMICS.

WAVE BEHAVES WHEN IT
INTERACTS WITH AN
ACOUSTIC MATERIAL.
ACOUSTIC PLASTER
(SOUND ABSORBER)
Acoustic plaster is plaster which contains fibers or
aggregate so that it absorbs sound. Early plasters
contained asbestos, but newer ones consist of a
base layer of absorptive substrate panels, which are
typically mineral wool, or a non-combustible
inorganic blow-glass granulate. A first finishing
layer is then applied on top of the substrate panels,
and sometimes a second finishing layer is added for
greater sound attenuation.
MARKET PRICE: RS. 120-300
BRANDS: armourcoat, birla jk, pidilite
ACOUSTIC TILES/ BOARDS
(SOUND ABSORBERS AND
DIFFUSERS)
Offered in a wide variety of materials, sizes, and designs, acoustic ceiling tiles are an
easy solution for improving the acoustical qualities of any space. These
soundproofing tiles manage noise control in large or small areas to keep acoustics in
balance for occupant comfort.

AUCOSTIC PYRAMID
FORM Acoustic foam is an open
celled foam used for acoustic

(SOUND DIFFUSER)
treatment. It attenuates airport
creasing air resistance, thus reducing
the amplitude of the waves. The
energy is dissipated as heat. Acoustic
foam can be made in several different
colors, sizes and thickness. Acoustic
foam can be attached to walls,
ceilings, doors, and other features of a
room to control noise levels,
vibration, and echoes. Many acoustic
foam products are treated
with dyes and/or fire inhibitors.
BRANDS: soundsolutions,
Sennheiser, Armstrong etc.
MARKET PRICE: RS. 800-40000 for
a set of 2 2x2ft. pads
THERMACOL
SHEETS
(SOUND
BARRIER)
Thermacol sheets are inexpensive and
quite efficient sound barriers, reflecting a
lot of sound waves into various directions.
Thermacol sheets with protective coatings
are used to acoustically isolate the room
and provide the sheets some stiffness. This
is quite an inexpensive way to soundproof
a room and depending on the sheet
thickness, to what degree.

Straw boards and porous
compressed natural fiber
boards made out of
compressed paddy, hemp,
wheat or dried grass. They
are excellent sound diffusers
and if available/ made
locally are exceptional for
their quality to price ratio.
They are biodegradable and
the best part is that they can
be used as both surface
covering as well as
structural elements.

STRAW BOARDS MARKET PRICE: RS. 300-

(SOUND DIFFUSER)
Foam glass is a porous glass foam
material. Its advantages as a building
material include its light weight, high
strength, and thermal and acoustic
insulating properties. It is made by
heating a mixture of crushed or
granulated glass and a blowing agent
(chemical foaming agent) such as
carbon or limestone.
Foam glass has good sound
insulation performance and strong
absorption of sound waves.
BRANDS: Krysteline, GEOCELL.
